“You didn’t know?”

I shook my head. “I’ve been working out in my suite.”

“Get someone to show it to you. It’s big, with plenty of equipment. The vampires use it at night, but in the day it’s mainly just us thralls. But I was on my way upstairs to do laps around the curtain wall—wanna come?”

I agreed, and we headed up the stairs and down the hall to the south tower.

Lesa joined us, dressed in joggers and sneakers, her curly black hair pulled into a messy bun. “You going up to the curtain wall? So am I.”

“Suit yourself,” said Eden with a shrug. As we entered the south tower, she called, “Race you to the top!” and took off with me and Lesa on her heels. The worn stone steps were too narrow to pass anyone, so I kept just behind Eden with Lesa following me.

When we reached the top, Eden high-fived me. “You made it.”

I dragged in a laughing breath. “Barely. I’m out of shape.”

Lesa emerged from the tower and bent over, hands on her thighs, sucking oxygen. “You two are insane.”

Eden just chuckled and jogged off into the mist, blond ponytail bouncing.

“Sometimes I want to smack her,” Lesa grumbled as we followed. “She’s just too perky to be true.”

It’s fake.

But I didn’t say it aloud, just smiled and shrugged.

We passed the place where I’d had wild monkey sex with Brien yesterday evening. My stomach constricted.

It had been so good…and that was bad.

The man was making me question everything I believed about myself. Being a slayer was in my goddamned DNA. So why hadn’t I staked Brien when I’d had the chance?

I’d spent half of the night tossing and turning, my brain like a hamster on crack, racing in circles and never getting anywhere.

Suppose I did tell him the truth and he thought it was just another lie? I hadn’t even kept the notes. Even the switchblade wasn’t proof—I could’ve swiped it from somewhere.

I accelerated, racing after Eden until I caught her. She sped up too, and we ran together until we lapped Lesa.

I made an apologetic face at her. “Sorry. I need a workout.”

Lesa flapped a hand at me. “Go right ahead.”

Eden and I kept going until sweat dripped down our faces.

The second time we lapped Lesa, Eden flashed a tight grin at me. “You seem like you’re in pretty good shape to me.”

“I haven’t had much chance to work out lately.”

She grunted. “Where’re you from, anyway?”

“LA.”

“Jesus, why’d you leave?”

“I went off to school.”

“And you never went home?”

My chest tightened.A slayer doesn’t go home, they hole up for a few weeks’ vacation and then move on to their next assignment.
