She let out athere-you-arecry and twined around my legs.

I scooped her up. “Sorry, but I’m on my way down. You’d better come with me, or you might get locked out.”

She flicked her black ear and butted her head against my chest, demanding I pet her. When I obliged, she relaxed, purring.

I rubbed my cheek against her fur. “You’re a big softie, aren’t you? That hard-ass thing is just an act.”

The fog had drifted back. Misty fingers curled over the battlements.

As I started toward the tower, cat in my arms, it descended like a curtain dropping. I couldn’t see the door five yards away.

Fuck. I tightened my grip on Demon and continued forward, using the stone wall on my left as a guide.

It’s only fog.

Until it wasn’t.

Jules Leclerc coalesced out of the gray mist. “Hello,ma petite.”

I recoiled, heart in my throat.

He was dressed in head-to-toe black Armani. He peeled his lips at me in what was meant to be a smile but didn’t quite succeed. He was showing too much gum, and his gaze was the fixed stare of a predator.

“You’re my son’s new thrall.”

“Yes.” Hugging Demon closer, I straightened my spine.

Never let a vampire see your fear.

He tilted his head to one side. “What’s your name?”

I hesitated, but he probably knew the answer anyway. “Twilight.”

“Twilight.” In his thick French accent, my current alias sounded almost pretty.

And Leclerc wasn’t bad looking, really. He was handsome in a sharp-boned, aristocratic way, and he smelled almost as good as Brien.

I swayed toward him, then caught myself. The motherfucker was messing with me, amping up his vampire allure.

I wrenched my gaze from his, my fingers twitching on Demon’s fur. I wanted to stake him so bad I could taste it.

Somehow, I dredged up a smile and started to edge past him. “Well, nice meeting you, but I was on my way down.”

He blocked me. “I didn’t say you could leave.”

I instinctively shifted to clueless Lainey Q, pursing my lips like I didn’t know what he was talking about. “I’m sorry, but I really have to go. Brien’s expecting me.”

I tried to edge around him again, but he trapped me between his body and the parapet.

“Brien can wait.” Bony fingers touched my face.

My skin crawled. I sidled along the wall toward the open door.

He brought his other hand up and tried to close it around my nape. I ducked and dodged away, but in evading him, I crushed Demon to my chest. She yowled and erupted, slashing his hand with her claws.

He hissed and grabbed my shoulders. “Bitch.” He gave me a shake.

Demon hissed back. I somehow managed to keep hold of her.
