“Do it,” I ordered.

Her eyes narrowed. Then a slow smile curled over her lips and to my surprise, she sashayed in a small circle, showing off her ass for me.

My dick pressed against my jeans. Damn, she was beautiful: strong and supple and vibrant. I couldn’t wait to feel all that fiery energy wrapped around me while I pounded into her.

“Remind me to give Avril a bonus,” I muttered.

“She has good taste. It’s like she knows me.”

I forced my gaze from her legs to her face. “I told her you were a sexy badass.”

“Yeah? That’s how you see me?” The badass looked…shy.

Charmed despite myself, I smiled. “Yeah.”

“I mean, Iama badass, but I don’t know how sexy I am.”

“Trust me. You’re sexy.” Wrapping my hand around her ponytail, I tilted her head back so I could kiss her. Her mouth was petal-soft and yielding beneath mine. I nibbled my way to her earlobe. “Want to know a secret?”

“Depends. Is it a good secret?”

“Yeah.” Releasing her hair, I skated my palms down to her hips, urging her up against my pelvis so she could feel how hard she’d made me. “I have a weakness for sexy badasses.”

“Sure you do.” She rolled her eyes at me. “All those supermodels you hang out with are secretly black belts.”

“Says the ‘Stylist to the Stars’ who was secretly a slayer.”

The corners of her mouth twitched. “You have me there.”

I turned her in the direction of the French door. “Wait for me in the garden,” I said with a hard tap to her ass. “I’ll get us something to drink.”

Outside the crescent moon shone down on a mist ghosting over the plantings, and tiny lights twinkled along the winding flagstone path. To my vampire sight, the shadowed scene was a living painting of pale, shimmering flowers, dark-branched trees and silvery leaves.

I followed Twilight’s scent to where she was seated on a cedar bench near the koi pool, one lean, fishnet-clad leg crossed over the other. The waterfall flowed softly into the pool. On the other side of the outer wall, a wolfdog whined, and a guard quieted it with a word.

“Hold these, will you?” Handing her the two glasses of prosecco I was carrying, I took out my dagger and cut a single pink rose for her, trimming the thorns. I slid the dagger back in its sheath and placed the rose on her lap. “For you.” I sat on the bench beside her.

Yearning flickered across Twilight’s face. She bit her lip. “Thank you.”

She handed me one of the glasses and picked up the flower, inhaling its sweet fragrance.

Her eyes met mine over top of the petals. “I don’t want to fight with you, Brien.”

“Then don’t. Just for tonight, let me romance you.”

“Romance me?” She gave a short laugh, like she was sure I was joking, but I’d seen that flash of yearning when I’d given her the rose. She touched the flower to her lips, then put it back on her lap.

“Yes.” I touched my glass to hers, holding her gaze as we sipped the dry, bubbly wine.

Suddenly, that was exactly what I wanted to do—romance her. I wanted to forget all the secrets and half-truths and treat her like the quirky, sexy, special woman she was.

Any thought of keeping her off-balance faded from my mind and I found myself speaking from the heart. “I like you, Twilight. I want to get to know you better.”

“I’d like that, too, but—” She rolled her lips into her mouth.

“Only what you want to tell me,” I added. “A truce, okay?”

She gave me a quick, searching look, then nodded. “It’s a deal.”
