My throat closed.

Maybe Twilight wasn’t in trouble. Maybe she’d left me.

“She’s in the castle?” I asked Demon.

The little white cat just stared up at me. We started toward the castle’s center, me jogging, her trotting alongside.

It occurred to me I might be able to locate Twilight by using the connection that had sprung up between us. I opened all my senses, trying to nail down her position. But all I could determine was that she was close, probably still in the castle.

My throat unclosed with a swoosh of relief. She was still on the island. She hadn’t left me.

I slowed to a walk and texted Cain and Talon.

Me:Where’s Twilight?

Talon responded first.Just woke up. Checking with security.

Cain’s text came a second later. On my way to your apartment.

Me:Not there. I’m outside—I glanced around—the Bite Club.

Cain:Stay where you are. I’ll be right there.

My hand clenched on the phone. Something was definitely wrong.

Cain raced around the bend, Talon right behind. They skidded to a halt.

My heart stumbled.

Jules.

Gwen’s drained, beaten body flashed before my eyes. Every muscle in my body locked. I’d never felt this afraid, not even when he’d tortured me with silver to toughen me up. It would be just like my father to harm the only woman I’d ever cared about.

But if he had, if he’ddared, then he was dust.

“Talk,” I barked.

“She staked your father,” Cain said.

I recoiled. “Twilight?”

He nodded grimly. “Prosper caught her practically in the act. He’s holding her in the lower level.”

I dragged a hand through my hair, wondering if I hadn’t woken up after all because this felt like some kind of nightmare. “Twilight staked Jules.”

“It’s true,” Talon confirmed.

“But how the fuck did she get into his apartment?”

Talon’s mouth bent down. “He got out somehow. She was in your garden—the one outside your apartment.”

I shook my head in disbelief. “But Jules hasn’t gone out during the day in close to a year.”

“He did this time,” said Cain.

I started for the stairs at a run. “And Prosper threw her in the fucking dungeon?”

She’s afraid of dark, enclosed spaces.
