Devin hummed a noncommittal response. It appeared no topic was safe between them, every aspect of her life whittled down to yet another argument.

“I was thinking you could help straighten out some of the paperwork.”

Devin dropped the razor she was using on her legs before she could slice open something important. The heavy plastic clattered across the shower floor as she peered over her shoulder at him.

She didn’t even have to ask. One side of Rey’s mouth lifted as he bent and handed her the razor back.

“I’m serious, sweetheart.” Leaning forward, he pressed his open mouth against the curve of her hip, scraping his teeth over the spot before he rose. A line formed between his eyebrows before he smoothed his expression, palm sliding down her back. “From home. Beau will bring by a laptop for you and the necessary files.”

Devin sighed but nodded in the end. She could argue, demand he take her to the office within Wicked’s walls, but there was little point. So soon after what happened, he would deny her on principle alone. Besides, it was something. A step forward, however small.

“How bad is it,” Devin asked as she turned her focus to the glide of the razor.

“Bad.” Rey snorted, shaking his head as he made room for Devin to step under the spray.

“You’re not angry with me?” She chewed on her lower lip, wondering why she even asked such a thing.

“Why would I be?”

“For being…” Devin twirled the razor in the air, a mute gesture that took in everything that happened since her return. The screaming, all her tears, all her demands.

“You want me to fix it, Devin,” Rey rasped as he cradled her jaw in his large hands, drawing Devin up to tiptoe so he could steal a ravenous kiss from her. He growled as he eased her back, putting space between them. “How can I be upset over that?”

“But you won’t do it.”

“Not that way.”

“What does that even mean?”

“It means my cock isn’t going to make everything better, no matter how much you want it to.” Rey’s hands came to her shoulders, fingers digging deep into the knotted muscle.

“Yes, it will.” Devin sniffed, tossing back the wet strands of her hair with a haughty lift of her chin though she melted under his touch.

“I love your confidence in my prowess,” he rumbled, lips teasing against the side of her neck. “But this is different. Now rinse off, the water is getting cold.”

“If by cold you mean one degree less than scalding.” Devin rolled her eyes as she ducked under the shower, swiping away the last of the thick cream coating her calves.

Buffed dry and wrapped in a towel, Devin surveyed the bed with a curl of her lips. Rey padded out of the warm mist after her, his hands coming to her tensed shoulders once more.

“Why did you let him do that to me,” Devin asked in a hushed whisper as she shrugged free and went to deconstruct the disastrous remains of her nest.

Busying herself with stripping away sheets and pillows tainted by her fear and distrust, Devin was certain she’d gone too far. That Rey would remain silent. The heady warmth was still there, surging between them. Two islands too close to allow for the gentle lapping of waves. A perpetual tempest that took as much as it gave.

“I wasn’t going to, at first,” Rey said quietly as he yanked the fitted sheet clean off with a single jerk of his powerful arm. “After that first heat, I was sure if I just let Beau back in a few times, you would choose me.”

“No one told me I had a choice, Daniel.” Devin tugged a pillow free of its case, tossing them in opposite directions.

“No, I didn’t.” Shoulders rolling against the burden of his thoughts, he folded a thin coverlet. The turn of his lips was sad, almost bitter as Devin made a perturbed sound at his sloppy creases. “But you were still supposed to pick me.”

“And since I didn’t…?”

“I thought you wanted him. That you… liked what he was doing to you, at least on some level.”

“But you said you knew the minute you saw me. Why would you let him do any of it to begin with?” Devin hopped up onto the bare mattress, a thick cover clutched to her chest.

“I don’t have an easy answer.” Rey came to her, shoving her knees open as he threw her blanket away. Tugging Devin’s head forward, he pressed her cheek against his hip. “I was too… too confused to claim you that first heat. Beau didn’t make it any easier for me.”

“If youknew, what did it matter what he said?”
