I couldn’t help laughing and shaking my head. There was a breath of guilt over waiting so long to tell her, but I brushed it away, focusing on the moment.

“She? I don’t know what it is yet. It’s too soon.”

Momma waved a hand at me.

“Pshaw. It’s a girl. Trust me.”

I shook my head again but didn’t argue. I’d secretly been picturing a little boy with green eyes and dark, wavy hair, but no matter what my baby turned out to be, I’d love them just like Momma said.

Chapter Thirty-One

Cadence

Another month sped by in the blink of an eye, and summer finally showed signs of giving in to the encroaching fall.

Momma had a few good days where I could sit and discuss my pregnancy and what was to come, but the bad seemed to get worse. I called the doctor to schedule an appointment to check everything, but there was nothing we could do but wait until then.

I’d secretly hoped Momma would be in a good mood on the day I was scheduled to get my ultrasound, but when I came down the stairs, she still hadn’t come out of her room.

“Should we check on her?”

Michael had his bag slung over his shoulder, staring at Momma’s bedroom door, but I shook my head when he looked at me.

“Let her sleep. I heard her pacing and crying last night, so she’s probably exhausted. She’ll be okay until I get back home.”

I had taken the day off from work since the ultrasound was done at a different office than my usual doctor visits and I didn’t think I’d be able to focus afterward to be able to go back to work.

Michael looked torn but finally gave me a nod.

“I’ll leave a note for her so she doesn’t worry. Go ahead and get in the car, and I’ll be there in a second.”

Relief crossed his face and he nodded again, heading for the front door. I was taking him to school so I could use the car to get to my appointment, and we needed to get going or he would be late. I was planning to buy another vehicle soon so Michael could keep the Toyota when he left for college, I just hadn’t had the time to look into it yet.

Scratching a quick message to let Momma know we’d left but I would be back soon, I put the note on the kitchen counter where she would spot it when she made her coffee, then joined Michael in the car.

“Are you excited?”

I couldn’t stop the broad grin that spread across my face at his question. Excited wasn’t a strong enough word for how I felt. I couldn’t hold still.

The only dark spot was that my mind slipped to Leo. He’d told me how much he looked forward to seeing our baby with me, but that had beenbefore.

My smile faltered, though I fought to keep it in place.

“I can come with you. Missing an hour or two of school won’t hurt.”

I shot him a look as I shook my head.

“No, it’s okay. You need to focus on your classes so you can have your choice of colleges.”

Michael faked a pout, poking out his bottom lip and giving me his best impression of puppy eyes.

“Don’t I deserve to know if I’m going to have a little niece or nephew?”

I snorted, pulling up to the front of the high school I’d attended years before.

“I’ll text you.IfI decide to find out.”

Michael rolled his eyes, but I caught his smile before he climbed out of the car.
