Her chuckle lifted a weight from my chest, a bubble of hope welling inside. Pulling back from me, she raised her head, the smile on her face making my heart stutter.
I lifted a hand to cup her cheek, letting her see the truth of my words.
“I promise to do my best for you. To provide for our family and protect you from the world. To be there when you need me.”
Ignoring the wiggle of fear I still felt, I let her go and stepped back, reaching into my jacket for the little box I’d stopped to retrieve from my safe. I wouldn’t dare ask her to let me claim her yet, but I hoped she’d take this step with me for now.
“Cadence, I will do anything to have you in my life. If I need to cut ties with my family and move where no one knows our name, I’m willing to do it for you.”
Dropping to one knee, I opened the box and held it up to her.
“I know you don’t need me. You are strong, and capable, and you leave me in awe at what you’ve managed. ButIneedyou. Please say you’ll forgive me, and let me make it up to you.”
Her hands went to her mouth, tears sparkling in her eyes as she stared down at me. My heart hammered, each moment she took to answer making my vision tunnel as the fear grew.
“Okay.”
I almost didn’t hear her whisper over the pounding in my ears, but the smile on her face as she lowered her hands assured me I hadn’t imagined it.
“What?”
Cadence chuckled, shaking her head as she rolled her eyes.
“As strong and capable as you think I am, I need you too. I know your world isn’t always safe, but I know you will do everything you can to make sureweare. You’re my alpha. And I would never make you choose between us and your family either.”
Surging to my feet, I wrapped my arms around her and claimed her lips again. Pausing only long enough to place the ring on her finger, I kissed her and didn’t stop until she pushed me away.
Laughing between gasps for air, Cadence ran her hands over my shoulders as she smiled up at me. Adjusting her stance, her hip brushed against my erection, a hungry gleam entering her eyes.
“Leo Galleon, I have a proposition for you.”
Brow quirking, a slow grin spread across my face.
“Anything you want,” I answered.
Smile widening, Cadence gripped my lapels as she stepped backward into the house. I pushed the door shut behind me as she ran a hand down the center of my chest.
“I’ll marry you in return for…”
She paused, and I leaned down, running my lips along the side of her neck to press kisses to the top of her shoulder. Sliding my other hand around her, I took a handful of her ass and ground my straining cock against her belly.

Sighing, she let her head fall back, giving me access to kiss down her throat to the top of her chest. When she still didn’t speak, I stopped and straightened, a low growl rolling from my chest. Giggling, she turned and ran a few steps up the stairs, glancing over her shoulder to be sure I followed. Chuckling under my breath, I reached up and loosened my tie as I lifted my foot onto the bottom step.
