However, there is no judgment in my gaze towards him, only the will to know...and he pours out to me the curse of the knowledge he probably swore to carry with him to his grave.

"My father was the right-hand man of the Mafia and also the highest-ranked assassin, just as I grew up to be. He was nicknamed the queen; wanna know why?"

"Let me guess." I press a finger on my m lips. "A chess inference?"

He gives an approving smile that gives me this jittery feeling, like it actually feels good being praised by him. "Smart girl. There was nothing he wouldn't do. Nowhere he wouldn't go for Giovanni Ricci. To many, he was respected, especially within our fold. Outside, however, he was scorned by the law and rivaling families as thecanéof Giovanni."

I notice his eyes darken in hatred just a little before he harnesses the emotions and strings them around his neck by rolling his shoulders to produce a satisfying crack. That feels relieving, even for me, who only heard the ripple of air bubbles escaping from the joints of his shoulders and neck bones.

"Ricardo was strong. The definition of the word even, but strength itself is in priorities. That's why God himself seems to be weak in some instances. He's not. It's just strength and will not exist linearly. There's a barrier." He tries to explain as well as he can put it.

I must admit, I didn't think he'd be capable of using such words in a way that it'll make so much sense. It's beautiful to see that he's not just a battering ram for the Ricci family.

'Who are you kidding, Angela? He built a multi-billion-dollar empire from fifty million dollars in just about ten years. He's brain gold!" My mind scolds me against all forms of stereotypes I hold against him and his judicial standing.

"When it came to his family, however, that's where his strength flickered. Can you blame him, though?" He laughs in a way that I don't ever want to hear him laugh again; this sad, regretful laughter that you know comes from a heart of pain and the will to stifle a cry. "He watched his child go through physical, mental, and emotional torture to bring him up to the level of emotional unattachment that he had. None of the tactics used by Giovanni worked because, after a hellish day in the claws of the instructor, the child would come home to meet the ever-loving hands of his parents. Mother and father are two complete madmen on the outside but totally polar opposites when it comes to the love they display towards young Ferro Valentino Russo. It was their only mistake, but one that Giovanni couldn't forgive."

He pauses to take a deep breath, and I let him, even resting my head deep into the crook of his neck and giving his bare chest a soothing rub, feeling the pain seer through his skin.

"If the torture for Ferro wasn't enough," he talks about himself in the third person to lessen the pain felt. It'd be much easier to let it out if he feels like he is talking about another person. "... Giovanni took his mother first. Punishment for misappropriation of funds that he claimed she used to fund my education. Ricardo watched as young Giuseppe, a boy that grew up as the best friend of his own son, pulled the trigger on a woman he always called Aunty Elena, and once the shot went off, all Ferro could look at was him, with anger in his eyes, begging him to do something about it. He got a bullet in my leg from that day." He raises his leg to reveal darkened skin around his lower thigh.

"Ricardo later explained to Ferro that Helena made that sacrifice for him to live a life outside the Mafia and that they were going to escape together. The plan was simple. Run. But there's only so far you can run from the clutches of evil, and his father was killed by his own hands on the order of Giovanni and his when they were finally caught. He made Ferro believe that he had done too much to be allowed to live any way but made him promise that Giovanni would serve the same fate. Some six years later, Giovanni died by my own hands, and it gave me a window to take away from the Mafia with a sum of money...you already know the rest."

I sit up from my restful pose when a drop of liquid hits my neck. Is he?

Yes...

"Oh, my God, Ferro..." I cup his face in my hands and bend to kiss the tears off his face. "I'm so sorry for making you do this. I should've known..."

"Ah, Serafina. It's a sad tale. It'll bring some tears" he breaks into a smile that makes him even prettier with glistening eyes and face.

On that note...

"I have a confession," I say with my head bowed.

"Well, that's what this session is all about, isn't it?" He shrugs, giving me the confidence to proceed with my confession.

"I'm hunting the killer of my father to end him myself. I just want to use the court to draw him out. I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I'm an attorney. It's not going to be difficult." I let off my chest as quickly as possible.

He looks at me like I've gone mad, but I don't mind. Everyone I told this - which is only one person - looked at me the same way.

"Angela. You're taking on an organization. You. One woman. There has been no judicial precedence that has been able to even touch them; I doubt if any court would even take up your case... please. Stop!" He takes my head and shoves it down his embrace again. I stay like that for a while, reveling in his touch.

I love it.

I love him...but I can't stop. Not now, not till I've gotten the revenge I have planned.

Chapter ten

Spiraling Out

Fear, Panic, Alarm

The minute she leaves my house, I begin throwing a tantrum, scattering things in the house, expensive or not. Immediately after our little confession ceremony, somehow, she still convinced me to let her in on some records that I kept of the Mafia, financial, video and images. Everything.

I didn't give them to her, though, I only showed them to her, but I know Angela. She's not stupid; there's every possibility that she has a device that she'd later have used to copy the files. I know this because her face looks more determined than ever, and she tells me 'she'll call me when it's done' and that 'I wouldn't have to worry about the Ricci family in a short while.'

Who does she think she is?!
