Pain lanced through Jagger’s chest as he trembled. "Y-yes."

"Then you'll do as I say. Let's get something straight. If you ever leave and think you can mosey off in a few years and escape my memory, think again. I'll find you, and your death will make today look like nothing. Don’t take my mercy for granted."

Landy snapped his fingers, and his men-at-arms came forward.

"Cut him down. There's a place we can take him to where he'll heal naturally, and he can keep the marks as a reminder. Make sure you clean the cuts with vodka before you bandage him so he doesn't get an infection and croak."

Jagger couldn't stand when they cut the ropes. He fell and bit his tongue hard enough to taste blood to keep a cry of pain locked in. The grass under him was wet with his blood, and everything started to fade.

The last thing he heard was Landy's voice.

"I almost feel sorry for you because I once thought we’d get married. I hope you enjoy your life sentence."
