“In the event we have company I can’t have you downstairs.” I didn’t even think about the physical implications of being his fake fiancé.

“Wait, am I expected to sleep with you or kiss you?” A part of me is hoping he will say yes. I don’t know why.

“I’m not expecting you to have sex with me. If we have company, you will sleep in my bed. As far as kissing, I expect you to be affectionate in public.” I’m both happy and worried. After last night I’m not sure I am strong enough to be in a room alone with him. “Is that a problem?” He looks at me.

“Do I have a choice?”

“No.”

“Then why would you ask?” I am annoyed by his constant entitled attitude.

“Baby girl, you are expected to behave ladylike. No back-talking, defiance, or sassiness from you. If you do, I will have to punish you.” I am going to say something about him calling me baby girl again but it’s obvious at this point he is doing it because it bothers me. “I’m going to introduce you as my fiancé. My mother might ask to see the ring. The story, it’s being resized.” He tells me as he parks. I didn’t even think about a ring.

“Ok.”

What the fuck have I gotten myself into? Lying is not something I am good at. They will see right through me. He parks and we get out of the SUV. Walking in the restaurant is very different from last night. It’s quiet. A few older women sitting drinking coffee. It’s not filled with men or women wearing skimpy clothes. He greets them while I smile. The kitchen door opens. He doesn’t let his mom walk towards us. Instead, he takes my hand and leads us to her.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hi, Sweetheart. I see you brought your friend back.” She smiles. I’m not sure why. It’s like she knows something is up.

“Let’s go to the kitchen.”

“Sounds serious.” There is a light laugh coming from her.

“It’s pretty simple. Ava and I are engaged.”

“Really?” She asks surprised. “Since when? I thought you just met.”

“We’ve known each other for some time. I didn’t mean to lie. I proposed last night. I wasn’t sure she would say yes. She is shy.” He looks at me.

“Let’s see the ring.” I hide my hand.

“It’s being resized.” He answers. Shit, how am I supposed to do this? I can’t even talk in front of his mom.

“Viktor, you can let her speak. You don’t have to be shy, Ava. You will be family soon enough.” I smile but don’t say anything.

“To the point of my visit, Mom. As a gift for her agreeing to marry me, I am sending you both on a spa day.”

“That sounds wonderful.”

“Ava has had a few hectic days. She could use some spoiling.” I’m not sure what he means by that. But I have to admit it sounds nice. I can’t remember the last time I got a proper haircut or a mani-pedi. I never get to do something for myself.

“I will arrange something.”

“Perfect. Call when you are ready to be picked up.” Viktor tells me.

“You don’t need to worry about anything.” Anita says. I have a feeling Anita’s words hold a deeper meaning. Like they are having a different conversation.

“Thanks, Mom.” He turns to me. “Call me if you need anything.”

“Ok.” He proceeds by pulling me into his arms and kissing me. It’s an unexpected kiss even though not ten minutes ago he said I would have to be affectionate. But this kiss is inappropriately longer than it should be, especially in front of his mother.

“Ok love birds. Off you go Viktor.” She smiles at me as she speaks.

“Thanks again, Mom.” Viktor pulls me close. “Behave baby girl.” He whispers in my ear followed by a chuckle.

“Ava, you are going to marry my son?”
