“Did you need something, Ms. O’Brien?” She looks alarmed.

“No, I’m fine. Thanks for breakfast. It was delicious.”

“You're welcome. I should ask, is there anything you won’t eat?”

“I eat everything.” I laugh knowing it to be true. When you are poor like me you learn to eat whatever you can afford. “I’ll let you get back to work. Came to get my phone.” I point at the dresser. She goes back to work as I walk over to the dresser. I have a text from Viktor.

Viktor: Good morning. I won’t be home until late. Call if you need anything.

Home until late. I want to scream that this is not my home. But no point in arguing. Viktor is set on his ways, that much I know. I can’t call Dad since he should be at work. What am I supposed to do now? There isn’t anything I can do. I decide to grab my AirPods and set out to explore where I will be living for the next year. With music blasting, I roam the halls. There isn’t much on the second floor. There are two other bedrooms, a door that is locked, maybe his bedroom and a small workout room. Downstairs there is an office, three bedrooms, a sitting room, formal living room, and dining room. This place is huge. I notice French Doors at the back of the first floor. I am assuming it leads to the backyard. I go to open it but someone stops me.

“Good morning ma’am. May I help you?”

“Good morning. Just want to go outside.”

“I apologize. We have strict orders for you to remain indoors until Mr. Manarch returns.”

“You can’t be serious?” I ask, my hand on my hip.

“I’m afraid I am.”

“This is ridiculous.”

“I am sorry ma’am.” He gives me an apologetic look.

What the fuck? Does he think I am going to leave again? He must realize I won’t make that mistake again. Besides there is no point since there is nowhere for me to hide. I won’t stand for this. I need to give him a piece of my mind. I am not going to be his prisoner. This is not part of the arrangement. I am supposed to be his fiancé, not his prisoner. I take a deep breath and dial.

Chapter Nineteen

Ava

“Good morning Ava. I hope you slept well.”

“Why can’t I go outside? Am I your prisoner?” I hear a lot of background noise. Since I don’t want anyone to hear my conversation, I walk to his office which I found earlier.

“You aren’t my prisoner. There is plenty to do in the house.”

“I need fresh air. I can’t be stuck in this house.”

“It’s just for today. We can discuss further when I get home.”

“I want to discuss it now.” I demand as I enter his office. It smells like him. It turns me on. It’s annoying.

“I’m in the middle of something.” He says. His voice is cold.

“I don’t care.” I sound like a brat but I don’t care.

“Oliver, take over. I need a minute.” The noise is becoming less. “What is the problem?”

“The problem is,” what is the problem? Why am I even bothering with him? I’m sure he doesn’t care that I want to go outside.

“I’m waiting.”

“The problem is I don’t want to be here. I need to be doing something. I’m not the house type.”

“Find a way to be. This is your life now. Think about what you have always wanted to do.” His voice is less cold. It’s like he cares what I want.

“You can’t expect me to be locked up in this house.” I scream.
