“About a dozen. Everyone made it out.”

“Thank God. Inventory?”

“Gone. The bomb did a number.”

“Fuck.”

“You need to go Viktor. The police are probably on their way. You have an image to keep. The last thing you need is to be questioned.” I can’t leave. These are my men. I can’t stand back and do nothing. “I only called to keep you posted. I didn’t think you were close enough to come.”

“I was taking care of something nearby.”

“I’ll call you after we speak with the cops.”

“I want an update every thirty minutes. Call for reinforcement.” I start walking.

“Where are you headed?”

“The office, where else?” I look back. I find the question stupid. “Every thirty minutes.” I get in the SUV.

Something isn’t right. I am missing something. First the warehouse, now the docks. Who is it and what do they want? I am dreading going back to the office. I am in no mood for work. But the pile of files and emails aren’t going to take care of themselves. I am almost at the office when my phone rings. The screen reads Ava. I am surprised she would call considering what happened at the restaurant.

“Ava,” I don’t get to say another word. I hear the clear sounds of bullets and her screams.

“Viktor,” she screams, saying words I can’t understand.

“Get down Ms. O’Brien.” I hear Marco in the background.

“Ava, where are you?” More screams but nothing that makes sense. “Ava put the phone on speaker.” I command. Unsure if she has done it, I decide to speak. “Marco,” I say.

“Sir,” he answers.

“What the fuck is going on?”

“I’m being ambushed. They are trying to pin me.”

“Where are you?” I hear Ava’s screams and it’s fucking paralyzing.

“Ten minutes from the house.” I gun it. “I don’t know if we will make it. Ms. O’Brien, get on the floor of the SUV.” I hear the sound of a window shattering.

“You have to. I’m calling reinforcements. Don’t stop Marco.”

“Yes sir.” I hear the sound of another window shattering and the screams from Ava. I end the call and dial Oliver.

“It hasn’t been thirty minutes, Viktor.” He mocks.

“Marco is being ambushed with Ava in the SUV.”

“Fuck. Where are they?”

“He is ten minutes from the house. He doesn’t know if he will make it.”

“A calculated attack.”

“I need everyone mobilized. Shut everything down. I am on my way. Call the guardhouse. He needs back up.”

“Don’t get killed.” I end the call and pull my gun from the secret compartment. I can’t get Ava’s screams out of my head. It will be at least twenty minutes before I can make it to the house going one twenty.

I want to call and comfort her. My girl needs me and I’m not there. But I need Marco to be focused. I am the target of all these attacks. It’s clear now. The question is who is attacking me and why. My list of enemies is long but at the top is Cillian. It has to be him. What does he want? He owns half the docks and my father still controls the clan. I will my SUV to go faster. Ava is in danger because of me. I am nearing the house. My men are everywhere. Angus, one of my loyal, top lieutenants and close friend, flags me. I don’t want to stop. I need to see Ava. But I do.
