“I don’t have time to stand around and reminisce about the past,” I tell him, my tone as icy as my death stare. I will kill this man once and for all.

“You should listen. You might learn a thing or two. My father died young. He was barely thirty-five when he was gunned down.”

“What’s your point?” I interrupt, cutting him off again, doubling the tick in his jaw.

“Aren’t you curious who killed him?” His question tells me the answer before he does.

“You,” I answer.

“Correct. I killed my father when I was fifteen. My father wasn’t going to relinquish control of the Clan to me when I was so young. He only gave me the keys to the kingdom on his deathbed. My father always told me I wasn’t ready to lead. I wasn’t a man yet. But I didn’t want to wait. It takes a real man to kill and get ahead.” He stares me up and down. “You don’t have what it takes.”

“So you think I will do the same?”

“It’s not about whether you will kill me like I did my father. It is a matter of when. You will never be capable of running this Clan like it’s meant to be run. You’re too soft, Viktor.”

I laugh. “I’ve killed more men than your men combined.”

“Yet you were willing to sacrifice everything for a fucking whore.”

“You will respect my wife.” When I step toward him, four of his men step toward me.

Not wanting to be seen as weak, he gestures for them to stop.

“You traded your family for someone who isn’t worth a penny.” I raise my gun to his head. “You can pull the trigger, but you will go down with me andneversee her again.”

“You’re a fucking coward who doesn’t care about anyone other than yourself,” I remark.

“And you don’t have what it takes to be a man and run the Clan. You won’t shoot.” I cock my gun, ready to shoot, but someone fires at me first.

The bullet misses, and everyone runs for cover. I aim my gun at my father, but someone pushes him out of the way. I sprint for my SUV as bullets fly over my head. I’m not afraid of death, but staying alive for my family is deadly important to me. By the time I slip into the SUV, a few men have fallen. It’s a sign that Marco’s team is at work.

As a car drives my way, I turn the ignition, shift into gear, and start reversing. At the entrance of the docks, I dial Oliver. He doesn’t answer, but my cell starts ringing shortly after, interrupting my redial. The screen reads Marco.

“Turn right,” he orders, not bothering to issue a greeting. “Now make a left. There’s a parking garage a click away. Go in. You have at least three cars following you.”

“Regroup at Eros.”

“Yes, sir.”

My father doesn’t realize his luck will end soon.

As I follow Marco’s instructions, I dial Oliver again. He still doesn’t answer. When I look into the rear mirror, I don’t see anyone following me. The garage is up ahead. I gun it and drive inside, then continue driving until I reach the upper level.

My cell rings again. Again, it is Marco.

“Sir, the coast is clear. You should be able to drive to Eros without any run-ins.”

“Have you heard from Oliver?” As the question leaves my mouth, I back out of my spot.

“No.”

“Pack it up and meet me at Eros.” My words are barely audible through my tight jaw.

“Yes, sir.”

I’ve had questionable moments with Marco. Many things have happened to Ava on his watch, but he’s as loyal as they come. Oliver made me see his value and how he isn’t to blame for past issues. It could have happened to any of us.

I’d like to think it isn’t the case. Nothing would happen to Ava when she’s with me, but the evidence has shown they can get to us at any moment.
