When I notice there are no missed calls or texts logged, I dial Oliver.

No answer. Again.

I send him a text.

Viktor:I want an update immediately

I feel useless as I leave my office. Being here is not helping anyone. I could go out and search for them, but that would be pointless too. There are too many places Ava could have been taken. I have no choice but to wait.

A short time later, my cell rings.

I answer without looking at the screen. “Hello,” I bark.

“You’re still alive.” My father sounds disappointed.

“Let’s end this. I’m tired of your bullshit. Come face me, Father.”

“I don’t have to do shit.” He responds like the coward I know he is.

“You’re dragging this fucking war out for what? Cillian is dead, and the Irish are dying one by one.”

“You did me a favor by killing Cillian. He was the competition. Of course, I would have done it myself, but you saved me the trouble.” When I laugh, he snaps, “What’s so funny, boy?”

“You. The end is nearing, and you don’t see it. You had your men dirty their hands instead of finishing the job yourself. There’s no point in dragging this out. Your death is inevitable.”

“You already know how to end this. Bring me your mother.” My blood is already hot, but it boils over when he adds, “I can always go after Niko if you need more motivation.”

“If you touch a hair on my family—”

“I’m tired of your threats. If you want to end this, come find me, son. You might just find your whore too.”

I need something—anything—that will lead me to my father and let me know Ava is alive.

I feel off-balance not knowing anything.

Needing to center myself, I dial Angus.

“Viktor, has Oliver found Ava?”

“No report on that yet. I need to hear the kids.” I slouch low in my office chair.

“Aye.” Their giggles get louder the further he walks. “You’re on speaker. Speak.”

“Hi, kiddos. Are you having fun?”

“Dadda,” they say at the same time.

“Momma and I will be home soon. You both behave for Uncle Angus. I love you.”

“Dadda.” When Aisling’s voice breaks, I know she’s about to cry.

“Take me off speaker,” I order.

Angus does as instructed immediately. “What’s going on?”

“How are they doing?”

He takes a moment to compile a response. “They’re fine. It helps that they’re too young to understand what is happening.”
