“What happened? Where am I?” I ask him while striving to gather my bearings without opening my heavy eyes.

“You’re in the hospital. Do you remember anything?”

He sounds exhausted, making me wonder how long I’ve been out.

“The last thing I remember is being shot.” A sudden wave of panic overtakes me, and I move to sit up. “Where’s Aisling?” I need to know where my daughter is.

“Aisling and Niko are fine.” I let out a relieved breath. “You need to stay laying down. You just had major surgery.” As he speaks, I take inventory of my body’s aches. It feels like a truck ran me over.

“How long have I been out?”

My throat works hard to swallow when Viktor answers. “About a day and a half.”

“Is she up?” someone asks.

“Oliver?”

I fight my eyelids open to witness his entrance. “It’s so good to hear your voice. You gave us quite the scare.” He strolls to the other side of my bed and squeezes my hand.

“I need to see my kids.” Seeing Aisling and Niko is the only way I’ll believe they’re safe.

“Of course you do,” Viktor says.

“I’ll Facetime them,” Oliver suggests while pulling his cell out of his suit pocket.

“Where’s Fiona?” I ask as Oliver drags his index finger over the screen of his cell.

“Dead.” Viktor’s voice is cold, with a trace of rage, but before I can assure him I’m fine, a far more pressing matter arises.

“Hi, Mom. She’s awake. She wants to see the kids.” Oliver hands me the cell.

“Hi, Anita,” I greet her, feeling warmth at seeing her. She has always been kind to me.

“Hi, sweetheart. You sure took your time waking up.” She’s teasing me, but I see the relief on her face. When I hear the giggles of my kids in the background, it is like sweet music to my ears. “Aisling, want to talk to Momma?”

“Mommy,” my beautiful daughter greets me, her smile blinding.

“Hi, baby.” Tears threaten to escape my eyes. “Are you having fun with grandma? Where’s Niko?”

“Mommy,” Niko’s tiny voice greets.

I can’t hold back my tears a second longer. “My big boy. Mommy loves you both so much.”

Over the next several minutes, I listen to Anita telling me how the kids have been doing while they babble in the background.

I lose myself in the comfort that they’re safe, which makes my aches and pains nowhere near as bad.

A nurse enters the room, interrupting our call. “So the monitors weren’t lying. You are awake.”

I pout when Viktor says, “We’ll call you back, Mom.”

After waiting for Viktor to remove the cell in front of me, the nurse asks, “Good morning. How is the patient feeling?”

“Ready to go home,” I tell her.

She laughs. “You aren’t quite there yet, but let me take your vitals in case of a miracle.”

Viktor stands up from his chair and looks like he will leave, forcing me to snap, “Don’t you dare leave.”
