With time, she will understand why I did this. Then we will get Niko and be the family we’re supposed to be.

ChapterFourteen

Diana

While reminiscing about the life I once had and how I got here, memories of my former best friend flood back. Anita is the reason my life didn’t turn out as it should have. She ruined everything when she took what was rightfully mine. Anita Manarch is the reason behind everything. I remember the night everything changed like it was yesterday.

Anita and I are dancing in a nightclub when a cute guy walks in. Our eyes met, and we exchange smiles. Thirty minutes later, Anita and I are in the VIP section with the guy and his friends. I am impressed when I learn his name. Dougal Manarch, the heir to the Manarch Clan. I know about the Clan through the grapevine. Everyone knows who the Manarchs are. Everyone also knows about the friction between the Scots and the Irish.

Dougal and I have a moment, so I am surprised when he gives all of his attention to Anita.

She is a nobody. If there is anyone who could bridge peace between the Scots and the Irish, it is me.

“I'm going to the bathroom. I'll be back.” I tell Anita, annoyed.

I sulk to the bathroom alone, not really wanting to be at the nightclub anymore. There is no point. The whole reason I went out tonight was to find someone to get my parents off my back. An Irish girl like me should have already been married, as they so eloquently remind me.

A few minutes later, I exit the bathroom and am stunned to find Dougal waiting for me.

“Hi,” I greet him, my fluttering heart in my tone. Perhaps he’s seen the error of his way.

“Do you have a minute?” His tone is rough and commanding. I love it. He is just my type.

“Sure,” I tell him.

He pulls me to the side, away from prying eyes. “I want to see you again.” I look around, confused. “Who are you searching for?” He demands, forcing my eyes back to his. I won’t lie—the control he exudes excites me.

“Anita. I thought you were interested in her.”

“I've seen you around,” he advises, ignoring my response.

“That doesn’t answer my question…”

My words are cut off when he pulls me in and kisses me like I was his…

That night feels like an eternity ago. I never imagined I’d be the mistress to the great Dougal Manarch. Maybe I should have stopped seeing him when he married Anita. I could have ended things when Viktor was born, but our relationship was so hot and heavy that I couldn’t give it up. We were made for each other. We desired the same things.

Dougal told me he didn’t love Anita. He loved me. He was only with her because of who she was and what she represented. She was a good Catholic girl, the perfect woman to bring home to his parents. Apparently, bringing an Irish girl home was out of the question. Even though I was who he wanted to bed.

Being a Manarch required certain things only Anita could give him. They never questioned her. So, Dougal and I lived a double life. He would be with me but go home to Anita each night. It worked for a while, but eventually, I wanted more.

Things took a turn when I found out I was pregnant.

“Dougal, we have to talk.”

“I don't have time,” he snaps, his mood unmanageable.

“You need to make time.”

I stroll over to him and slip onto his lap. His eyes are immediately drawn to the hem of my skirt. “What do you want?”

“I'm pregnant.”

He pushes me off his lap before I can gather my bearings. “What the fuck Diana? This better be a sick joke.” He stands and paces, a telltale sign he is beyond angry.

He isn’t the only one. “Why would I joke about this? You know I don't want kids.”

That isn’t entirely true. I hope getting pregnant will mean he’ll choose me over Anita once and for all. She has what belongs to me, but bearing his child will have him finally choosing me.
