“Don’t you fucking dare,” I warn her when she tries to increase the speed. “I want to savor you and hear you scream my name.”

I slowly slide in and out. It’s meant to bring her into submission, but it’s fucking difficult. I want to just empty myself inside her.

When I can’t hold back anymore, I thrust harder.

“Viktor,” Ava screams as she reaches euphoria.

I don’t stop until I’m empty.

I hold her in place for a few seconds before slowly sliding out.

“Put your jeans back on. I’m not done with you. Meet me with our box, on your knees by our bed.” When she twists around and gapes at me with a lusty, loved-up gleam in her eyes, I soften my tone. “I love you, Mrs. Manarch.”

“I love you, too, Mr. Manarch.”

How did I get so fucking lucky?

ChapterSeventeen

Ava

One week later…

The last couple of days have been chaotic as we finalized the upcoming issue for House of Beauty, and I’m laying in bed, exhausted. The trickiest part was when Maddie asked if I’d heard from Max. I told her he had left the country for a new project. That he had called me to apologize for his last-minute departure.

She took me at my word, which I’m glad of. I can’t exactly tell her the truth.

“Hey,” Viktor says, entering our bedroom.

“Hi.” I sit up in bed.

He sits beside me. “How are you feeling?”

“Tired.”

He pulls me to him. “No one will fault you for wanting to stay in bed.”

“Why do you think he did it?” It’s the burning question I’ve been too scared to ask. I never thought Max would be capable of kidnapping. It’s so out of character.

“Max?”

I nod to Viktor’s question.

“That man wasn’t right in the head.”

“He was good to me. I never saw any red flags,” I share after remembering my time with Max.

“That’s because you only see the good in people.”

I consider his words. After a short deliberation, I murmur, “I wouldn’t say that.”

“We met because you were willing to give up your freedom to protect your father, who didn’t deserve it.” Before I can object, he asks, “Why are you thinking of Max?” There’s no anger in his voice, but I can tell he’s bothered that I’m thinking about Max.

“Before you came back into my life, Max was a good friend. He cared about me, but I never imagined how far he’d go.”

“He only got as far as he did because you were alone. You were an easy target.” He rubs his chin, alerting me to a tic. “Max was a ghost.”

I peer at him, confused. “What do you mean?”
