He is so different when he’s with our kids. The tough, controlling man fades with them. It’s a side of Viktor I don’t think he knew he had.

“Dadda,” Aisling babbles, extending her arms to mimic Viktor’s stance.

When I peer past her, I notice Niko is crawling after her.

“Niko, are you trying to catch your sister?” I ask, sauntering toward him.

This is my happy place—with my family.

Later…

Both kids are finally sleeping, and I’m in the kitchen finishing dinner. I don’t often get to cook these days. It was an early night for them after spending hours playing with Viktor and me.

“Something smells good,” Oliver walks into the kitchen.

I spin to face him. “Thanks. Are you staying for dinner? I’m cooking lamb chops.”

“Are you really asking?” he quips.

“You’re an ass. How is everything? How are you doing?”

He leans his elbows on the counter. “Good.”

“Is there anything new with Cillian or Dougal?” I ask, knowing he’s the only one who will tell me the truth.

He shakes his head. “Nothing new.”

I’ve been asking Viktor, but he only tells me not to worry. It’s hard when I know what they’re capable of.

“You would tell me if something were wrong, right?”

“Yes,” he answers way too quickly.

I stare at him for a few seconds, expecting him to speak, but he doesn’t.

“Okay.” I breathe out heavily. “Help me make a salad.”

“I thoughtyouwere cooking.”

I open the oven to check the lamb chops. “I am, but you’re going to help me.”

“Fine. But I’m claiming the largest lamb chop.”

I smile as Oliver treads to the fridge.

I finally found my place in life.

How lucky am I?

ChapterEighteen

Viktor

Since Oliver was shot and I killed Max, things have been quiet. So quiet that it worries me, but I know better. Ava keeps telling me to enjoy the peace and stop worrying. I’m trying, but for Ava’s peace of mind, Oliver has moved into the mansion.

Ava still doesn’t know Oliver is her half-brother. A few days ago, I sent off samples from Ava and Oliver for DNA testing to see if Diana was telling the truth. Oliver doesn’t know I did it. The results should arrive any day now.
