I didn't know what to tell her. I didn't want to keep digging a hole for myself in the future, but I was too deep now to admit it was all a lie. I had to go big or go home.

"Mom, come on, I'll tell you when the time is right. As I said, we haven't discussed whether we would tell people about us, and I want to show him respect by maintaining our boundaries," I said.

It sounded good in my head, but by the look on my mother's face, she wasn't buying a word I was saying.

"Boundaries, boundaries, I'm starting to think you don't trust me," my mother said, a tear glistening in the corner of her eye.

At the sight of her starting to tear up, I knew I had to say something to fix this fast. My mom was a waterworks queen. Once one tear came, they all started to fall like rain.

My brain flitted around for a name. Then, I remembered my conversation on the phone last night.

"It's Aaron."

"Where?" My mother said, looking around.

"The guy I'm seeing, it's Aaron. We wanted to keep it a secret because we don't want the tabloids to know until the premiere of his new movie."

The lie came quickly. Aaron did say he was there to help, but my stomach was in knots as I explained.

My mother's face looked like it was going through the seven stages of grief as she took in the information.

"You and Aaron?" my mother asked, flabbergasted.

I nodded, my lips tight.

"Well, that's great that the two of you are dating, but why didn't you just tell me that? That's hardly a surprise, sweetie."

I rolled my eyes at her words. She still needed to take me more seriously.

"We aren't just dating; we're engaged," I added to see her face.

But as soon as those words left my mouth, I froze. Why in the world did I tell my mother that not only was I secretly dating my best friend but that we were engaged as well?

My mother's face lit up like a child being told they could eat candy for dinner.

"My, this is wonderful news. When is the wedding?" Mom asked as she raised her hands and clapped them.

I shook my head. "Keep your voice down."

My mother covered her mouth with her hand. "Sorry, I'm just so excited."

I could tell by the giddy look on her face that she was ecstatic. It warmed my heart to know she was happy, but it didn't last long. I FELT WORSE whenever I thought about the lie I had just told her.

"I can't believe you and Aaron finally got your heads out of your butts and got together. We have been waiting for this moment your whole lives," my mother squealed.

I smiled at her tone. I hadn't seen her this happy in years. While it was a lie, and just the thought of the lie made lead form in my stomach, I couldn't keep the smile off my face.

If Aaron and I were together, I imagined I'd be over the moon, so I had to act just like that. I was thrilled. Like my childhood dream had come true.

"Yeah, like I said, we want to keep it on the low until the movie premieres."

That would give me time to figure a way out of this lie since the movie had just finished shooting. The premiere wouldn't be for a while.

"I can keep a secret, honey, don't you worry. This is so exciting. I'll treat you to anything you want today."

She didn't need to do that. I was perfectly capable of buying my things.

"Mother, you don't have to."
