"Hello," Scott's voice said through the phone.

"Brother, I might have royally messed up," I confessed.

"What did you do? Please don't tell me you messed up the movie. Mom and Dad would hate it if you had to move home with us," Scott teased.

"No, the movie is fine," I said, clarifying that it had nothing to do with my work. "It's about our vacation."

"Did you book the wrong days? I knew you would mess something up," Scott sighed.

He always did this. He never took things seriously.

"It's not that. It's just…"

"Just what? Spit it out."

"Erica is joining us on the trip."

There was a short pause.

"And that's messed up. How?"

"She's joining us as my pretend fiancée."

"Well, that was the last thing I was expecting to hear, to be honest. Explain."

"Erica told her mom she was seeing someone to get her mom off her back about dating, and then lied to her further by saying it was me and that we were engaged. Her mom is over the moon, and Erica called me crying and apologizing, so I said I'd join in on the lie. Then, I invited her on our vacation to make things look more realistic."

"Let me get this straight. You and Erica will be fake engaged on our family vacation?"

"Exactly. See my dilemma?"

"This is perfect. It's just like a romantic comedy."

What was he talking about? Nothing about this was romantic or comedic. It would be a drama or, at worst, a horror movie.

"What makes you say that?"

"Come on. You two have known each other and are now pretending to be engaged. It's the perfect setup to discuss your feelings and finally get together."

"Don't be an idiot. If we were going to end up together, it would have happened by now," I protested.

I meant every word. If Erica and I had any chance of being together, it would have happened when we were younger. By now, it was just too late.

"All I am saying is that if you two do get together, I'm telling you, 'I told you so.'"

I rolled my eyes. Scott could be a joker and an idiot, but that's how the brothers were.

"Do Mom and Dad know?" Scott asked before I could say anything else.

"No, and I don't want them to. This has to be a secret. Erica doesn't even know I'm telling you. I just needed advice," I said, picking at my fingernails.

I was beyond nervous about this trip, but deep down, I was excited. I am excited to see Erica and spend some personal time with her and my family.

"Well, what advice do you want?"

"How do I not fall even harder for her while we pretend to be engaged on vacation?"

Scott laughed out loud again. "Man, I'm telling you. It's gonna happen, no matter if you try or not. You two are meant for one another."
