William's brow furrowed as he turned back to his football buddies. William was the type who peaked in high school. He was one of our team's running backs but wasn't good enough to play in college and would be a townie his whole life. Nothing was wrong with that, but he wasn't going anywhere cool like Aaron and I were.

I had gotten into a division one college on a full-ride scholarship because of my grades. Only a few people knew how smart I was, but Aaron did, and he had always been so supportive of my academic success.

"Thanks, Aaron," I said as we walked away from William and his crew.

The fact that Aaron thought I was gorgeous did not go unnoticed. "I cannot stand him."

Aaron let out a low laugh. "I know. He's so annoying."

We finally made it to a quiet corner of the party, and Aaron dropped his arm from around my shoulder. Instead, he leaned his arm against the wall as I faced him.

Looking up at him, I realized he was taller than my five-foot-six frame. I gulped as I gazed at him.

Aaron wasn't looking at me but was instead looking around the crowd.

I wanted nothing more than to kiss him, but I would have to make the first move by getting on my tip toes and leaning up. It would be a lot easier if he was facing me.

"So, Aaron. Enjoying the party so far?" I asked, hoping that I'd have his undivided attention.

Aaron glanced down at me before glancing back around.

"It's okay. Better, now that you're here."

I flushed at his words. It seemed like he was interested, except that he wouldn't stay looking at me.

I tugged on his jacket. "I like the look. It's very chic."

Aaron let his head fall back as he let out a loud laugh, drawing the attention of the people around us.

"I wouldn't call this look chic, but thanks, E."

I loved it when he called me that. It was his personal nickname for me. It always made me feel bubbly inside.

"Maybe not chic, but you do look good," I said, twirling a strand of my long dark hair around a finger.

Amanda told me it was a flirty thing to do and that I should try it out around Aaron. Aaron was yet again not looking at me, though. His eyes were elsewhere. Was I really that boring, or was he looking for someone?

"Are you looking for someone?" I finally asked after a moment of silence.

That got Aaron to look at me; his pale skin turned red this time.

"No, why would you think that?" Aaron asked as he rubbed the back of his neck.

His face was red, and he was acting sheepish. He was definitely lying to me.

"You totally are. Who?" I grilled him.

Aaron opened his mouth to respond. "I'm gonna go get a beer. You want one?"

My eyes turned to slits, but I nodded.

"Cool. I'll be right back."

Aaron slipped away, and I watched his back as he disappeared into the crowd.

I stood there in the corner by myself for ten minutes, waiting for him. The kitchen, where the keg was, was pretty close, so it should have taken him less time to return. I headed toward the kitchen.

The living room was big and complete to the brim of our classmates, so it took me a minute or two to navigate my way to the kitchen. By the time I got there, Aaron was nowhere to be found.
