We must have just missed each other.

I walk back into the living room and scan the room for Aaron. I didn't see his tall frame or blond spikes anywhere. My gaze hits the staircase, and I see Aaron's ex-girlfriend, Claudia Banks, heading up the stairs.

Aaron would be heartbroken once he found Claudia was heading upstairs to hook up with some rando.

Looking at the guy who was with her, my blood ran cold.

It was Aaron.

They were holding hands as they maneuvered up the stairs.

Claudia must have been whom he was looking for earlier. He wanted to get back with her. He wasn't interested in me.

Hot tears stung my eyes as the realization hit me.

Aaron never wanted me, and he never would.

I ran out of the party and to the tree that I had waited for Aaron by.

Leaning against the tree, I let the tears flow freely. My heart was shattered, and I felt so stupid. I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. Aaron had never been interested in me, and I was just overlooking things because I wanted him to want me.

He did call me gorgeous earlier, but maybe I wasn't his type.

I knew I shouldn't compare myself to her, looks-wise, since that would make me feel worse, but I couldn't help it.

Claudia was beautiful. She had tan skin and light brown hair to match. Her eyes were a warm blue compared to my dark brown eyes. We looked nothing alike besides the fact that we were both brunettes. She had a cute button nose, while mine was a little pointier. She was short, while I was a little taller.

Aaron always went for the short girls. I don't know why I thought I stood a chance.

The tears were coming in full force and were almost sobs.

I knew I needed to get myself together before someone saw me. No doubt, my crying would get back to Aaron, and he would want to defend my honor. He would fight whoever made me cry, but whom would he fight when he found out it was himself?

"Erica?" I heard my name being called by a feminine voice. "Are you out here?"

I wiped my tears away with my long sleeves and sucked in a breath, hoping I didn't look like I was just bawling my eyes out.

Staying silent, I hoped that whomever it was would head back inside.

"Erica, I saw you run out of the party. Where are you?" Amanda's voice floated toward me.

Amanda and I weren't the closest, but we did come here together.

"I'm over here," I yelled back.

Amanda approached me, but she stopped when she saw my disarray.

"What happened? Are you okay?"

A new bout of tears wanted to fall, but I held them back.

"I'm fine; I just want to get out of here."

"Tell me what happened, and I'll take you home," Amanda said, hands on her hips.

This time, a few tears escaped. "Aaron is upstairs with his ex, Claudia Banks."

"Oh, honey," Amanda said as she wrapped her arms around me. "Aaron's an idiot."
