I only had plans to keep me busy for a short time.

"Cancel your plans. This man is tall, handsome, and, again, a pilot. Not every day you get to go out with a man who flies planes, Erica."

My mother gave me a stern look. I knew she wanted me to meet this mystery man, but I had no desire. I had gone to a handful of her setups, and the men were always stuck up.

"Mom, I really can't. It's Aaron's birthday."

At the mention of Aaron, my mother raised her right eyebrow. She knew what Aaron meant to me, which is probably why she wanted to set me up with someone.

"Honey, I'm sure Aaron would understand. You two talk all the time."

"It's his birthday. I can't talk to him today."

"Fine, but you're going to regret missing this dinner. I do not know what I will tell Laura and Tad, but I'll try to think of a good excuse."

I laughed internally at the name Tad. The name just sounded pretentious. There was no way I would fall in love and marry some guy named Tad.

"Sorry, Mom, maybe next time. Just give me more of a heads-up."

My mom glared at me. We both knew I would find a reason to not show up next time too.

"Well, I have to get going," my mother stood up.

My heart deflated a little bit. Mom got her message across and was now leaving. It was like she didn't even want to spend time with me. She just wanted to set me up, and if that didn't work, she would leave me alone.

"Okay, let me walk you out."

We got up, and I walked her out to her car.

"Honey, I just want you to be happy," my mother said as she unlocked her car.

"I know, Mom, I know."

She smiled at me before entering the driver's seat and driving away. I watched as she went, wishing we could have spent more time together besides chatting about a potential date.

I shook out my long hair before turning and heading back inside. It was almost time for my video call with Aaron.

I ran to the bathroom to ensure I didn't have any food in my teeth before going to my bedroom to prepare for the call.

###

"Hey there, stranger," Aaron said as he answered the video call.

He wore a black button-up shirt, and his blonde hair was slicked back. He looked good like he always did, but sometimes I missed seeing the black eyeliner around his eyes that he stopped wearing after we graduated.

"Hey, Aaron. Happy birthday! I can't believe you're twenty-five already."

Aaron was a few months older than me, so I was still twenty-four.

"I know, right? It feels like just yesterday we were eighteen, waiting to graduate high school, and now here we are, college graduates, following our dreams."

Aaron was a well-known movie producer, one of the youngest ever. While I could have been more successful, I made a living writing commercial jingles while waiting for my songwriting career to take off.

"Where are you?" I asked.

I could see he was walking and didn't recognize the background.

"I'm leaving the set of a movie we just finished shooting. Guess who is starring in it?"
