“Let me just say this before he comes back over here,” she says, her voice a little lower. “I am here to listen, if you ever need a friend. Holden can be…a little much. He has a way with people. He draws them in but no one really knows much about him. He’s as much a mystery to me as he was when he first arrived here.”

I eye the man we’re talking about and see him shaking something in a metal container. I can see his biceps flex as he does it, and my mouth goes dry.

Yeah, he’s something, that’s for sure.

“Thanks,” I say, but giving her all my secrets is something that I’ll have to really think about. I don’t know if I can trust her.

I don’t even know if I can trust Holden. For all I know, he told everyone I fucked him.

My skin grows clammy just thinking about it. I should ask him and then tell him that I like my business to stay private.

A drink is placed before me, and I stare down at it.

“Oh, you’re going to love it,” Holden says, scooting it a little closer to me. “Take a sip. I want to see you swallow.”

I gulp and stare down at the blue concoction. A pretty pink umbrella sits in the middle. I’m not used to this shit. I drink beers and whiskey.

If my dad ever saw me holding one of these he’d think I’d been possessed.

“Go on,” Holden says, looking far too eager. Probably wants to watch me choke on it.

I lift the cool glass and press it to my lips, and then I’m taking a sip. Fruit explodes on my tongue with a hint of alcohol and damn, that tastes good. Refreshing even.

“He likes it, Polly Pocket,” Holden says and then bites his bottom lip. “I won’t do you dirty. I knew you wouldn’t choke on it.”

I take another sip, and he smirks at me, those blue eyes twinkling, and I feel my cheeks flush. Now I’m getting all nervous.

Holden leans forward, his elbows on the bar. “You wanna come over tonight after I get off?” he asks.

I gulp a little too fast and an ice cube slides down my throat. Oh fuck, that burns.

Gasping, I hit my chest, and thank fuck for it melting and sliding all the way down because I don’t want to die yet.

“Ah, choked a little it seems,” he teases, and when I can’t answer because my skin is melting off and I’ve lost all brain function, he taps my nose and walks away.

I watch his ass the entire time.

“You really gonna fall intothattrap?” Polly asks me, and I startle, having forgotten that she was still there.

“Uh, no. I got an early morning.” Like that explains anything at all. I’ve already fallen into that trap, and now I’m fucking stuck.

Polly’s eyes positively sparkle as she watches me, like she knows I’m going to linger about until he’s off.

Well, she doesn’t know me. I don’t linger.

I glance over at Holden and see him wink at a patron, handing him something I can’t identify, and my heart flip-flops in my chest.

He’s a flirt. What he did with me he’d do with anyone here. I’m nothing special.

I gulp down the rest of my drink and set it on the bar top far too roughly. It clatters noisily and some eyes are drawn to me.

Polly pats my arm, and I shrug it off, needing to leave. I shouldn’t have come here in the first place. What the hell was I thinking?

I’m not into guys. Not ones with fantastic asses.

And definitely not ones I’ve had sex with.

“Gonna go,” I say, feeling a little tipsy. What did he put in that drink? Toxic, is what it is.
