“Are you sure?” I urged, knotting my brows together. “Something has to be wrong, Darius. You left last night without a word, and now, I find out that you’ve been with another woman all morning long. Do you … are you …”

I didn’t even know what I wanted to say. The words seemed to be trapped in my throat.

“What’s wrong?” I pleaded, chest tightening as I thought the worst.

If he had done something with someone else, I would’ve felt it last night, right? I would’ve been hurting. Why had he just left me?

“You want to know, Sina?” he asked, becoming … almostirritated? “It’s you.”

I stared at him through wide eyes. “Me?”

“You and,” he said, finally looking up at me, “us.”

“Us?” I whispered, the word barely getting past my lips. “What about us?”

Darius tore his gaze away from me again and looked back down at his feet. Fear gripped me by the throat. My heart pounded inside my rib cage. The more time that passed by, the more and more I wondered if the next words to exit Darius’s mouth would be,I reject you.

“Wh-what do you mean,it’s me?” Sina asked, a wave of tears welling in her eyes.

Guilt rushed through me because the words had come out that way. I hadn’t meant for Sina to feel bad for marking and mating with the other guys. We were all her mates, but sometimes—hell, most times—I felt left out of the group.

I wanted her to love me just as much as I loved her, just as much as she did the others. Could she ever love me that much? Were all these doubts and insecurities just in my head? Had I ever been built to mate with someone as strong and powerful as her?

“Darius,” she whispered, “talk to me.”

“I-I’m sorry.”

Fuck, I didn’t know what else to say. How could I tell her that I felt left out? I found it so embarrassing, so terrible to say aloud. It wasn’t like they had done something to make me feel this way. I just was awkward as fuck sometimes.

“Please tell me that you didn’t”—she paused for a few long moments, her voice frail and wavering, as more tears piled up in her eyes—“do anything with Hellana. I’m sorry if I hurt you in some way, Darius, but please … you couldn’t have.”

“What?” I asked breathlessly, unsure if I had heard her. “You think I would cheat?”

A single tear rolled down Sina’s cheek, but she quickly turned away from me. Moments ago, she had been training to be the strongest species and warrior that had ever lived in our lifetime, and now … she was broken.

I grasped her wrist and turned her around to face me. “Do you?”

She shielded her face from me and took a step away, wrapping her arms around her body. “No, I don’t think so. But honestly, I don’t know what to think right now. You barely came home last night, and this morning, you were gone, off with Hellana, another woman.”

My chest tightened. “I didn’t do anything with her, Sina. I wanted to help her settle.”

When I moved toward her, Sina stepped back. “I wanted to spend time with you last night. That’s why I asked Calder and Thayer to leave, so you, Gaian, and I could have some fun and …” She frowned. “And you just left without a good-bye.”

“I left to give you and Gaian space.”

“And this morning?” Sina asked, furrowing her brows. “What about then?”

“This morning, I …” I started, my mouth dry and my throat tight. “This morning, I didn’t think you’d want me there. You were in Gaian’s room with the door closed completely. What was I supposed to do?”

“Why wouldn’t I want you there?” she asked quietly. “You’re my mate.”

After turning away from her, I glanced down at the bloody prison floor. “Sina …”
