“I do,” Gaian reassured. “But I didn’t think Sina did.”

“He’s pissing me off,” she said, staring at the ground.

Through the mate bond, I could feel the way her chest tightened, as if she was thinking about the past with him.

“He’s always been a liar, a cheat.”

“Yeah, well, he’s in the past,” Darius said, walking beside us. “You got us now.”

Her lips curled into a wide smile. “I know.”

As we approached the demon sector—or more specifically, The Inferno—Sina tensed again, her nose scrunching.

“It’s stronger,” she whispered, clutching her head. “I feel it rushing through my veins, pounding in my head.”

“The fuck is that?” Calder asked. “Why’re there so many people at The Inferno?”

I glanced toward the club, my eyes widening slightly when I saw how many demons stood at the doors to attempt to gain access. What the fuck was happening there?

It wasn’t like I could march into The Inferno and ask Mother anything. She had fucking banned me from coming back and denounced me as her son because werewolf blood ran through my veins—becauseshehad hooked up with a wolf and gotten pregnant.

Plus, Xorgor had royal demon blood. He had to know more about Jaroth than us.

“Don’t look at me. I don’t fucking know,” I said, snatching Sina’s hand tighter and tugging her past the club so whatever was happening to her would stop. It seemed like the influx of demons here was making her sick. “But we need to get Sina away from here.”

Once we finally made it out of the town, Gaian touched Sina’s shoulder. “You good?”

“Yeah, I’m fine now.”

I nodded to myself and retraced my steps to Maxine’s old home.

We marched up the sidewalk, and I banged on the door. “Maxine! Open the fucking door. I need to talk to Xorgor right now. It’s important.”

A moment later, the door swung open, and Maxine pulled us into the room quickly, slamming the door behind us. “Don’t scream my name! Xorgor isn’t here. He… We…” Maxine paused, guilt and…bloodon her face. “He’s out in town right now. He should be back soon.”

“What’s going on?” I asked. “Why do you have blood–”

The front door opened again, and Xorgor stepped into the room, cursing.

“The fuck is happening?” I asked him. “Jaroth just showed up at our house. Is he working with her father or not? And why the fuck are all those demons at The Inferno? We could barely get by.”

“Sina’s father and Jaroth are not working together,” Xorgor said, running his forked tongue across his jagged teeth. “Jaroth only works for himself. He would never work with a human, especially one like Sina’s father.”

“What the fuck does Jaroth want?” I growled, pacing Maxine’s living room, arms crossed.

I’d expected Jaroth to arrive in Durnbone and attempt to cart Sina out of the town, straight for her father. But he had told her to stay put, with us, where she’d be safe.

Xorgor ran a hand through his shaggy hair and murmured a demonic curse under his breath. “I don’t know and I don’t have time for that right now. The underworld is in chaos. The demon queen is dead.Murdered.”

Murdered?I mouthed.

Sometimes, a human in Durnbone was hard to murder, but how could someone terminate the demon queen’s life? Surely, she had security, people to protect her. And she was supposed to step down soon anyway.
