So, I grabbed a fistful of his hair and yanked it down so he stared at the ground and I had a clear view of the nape of his neck. Without hesitation, I stabbed the syringe into his spinal cord, the same way he must’ve done with Calder, and paralyzed him.

“Thanks for the information,” I said. “But I would never let you go. You asked me to paralyze all my mates. You asked me to give up my life for one where I’d be stuck with you forever. You paralyzed Calder and nearly ended his life. As soon as you sank your syringe into him, it was over for you, Jaroth. I’m not the girl you can push around anymore. I’m mated to the four strongest wolves in Durnbone.” I dropped the empty syringe on the ground and stood, kicking him straight in the jaw. “I’ll kill you later. For now, enjoy your useless life.”

After leavingJaroth to rot in the prison, Thayer, Gaian, Darius, and I decided what needed to happen next in order to end my fake father once and for all.

Fifteen minutes later, I stood at my bedroom door, nervous as fuck to tell Calder what I was about to do.

I peeked my head into the room to catch him glaring at the ceiling and gritting his teeth.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, stepping in and shutting the door behind me.

“I’ve always been the person that my pack leans on, that the guys lean on,” Calder said with his head turned toward the window. “I’ve never been someone who can just fucking lie in bed all day and let everyone do fucking everything.”

Once I stepped into his line of vision, I frowned at him, my stomach in knots.

“I hate this. I can’t even fucking move.”

“Maybe it’s the Moon Goddess’s doing,” I suggested. “To give you some rest.”

“More like the fucking devil,” he growled. “I don’t need to rest. I need to go out there and fight for my pack, for us, for you.”

I slouched down on the bed next to him, lying on my side, and gently played with the ends of his hair. While I didn’t want him paralyzed at all, he needed the rest. But I could tell that it was already weighing on him.

Being cooped up in my bedroom all day and all night, unable to move barely any part of his body, was taking a huge toll on him. And he was gettingjust a bitmoody. What would he do when I told him that I’d be leaving with Thayer and Gaian to find my father?

Probably shout. Maybe scream.

When he became quiet, I let out another low breath. “You’re not going to like this,” I whispered, stroking my fingers through his thick hair.

“What?” he asked, turning his head toward me, eyes glinting in the golden sunlight.

“Please, don’t be mad.”

“What is it?”

“Jaroth gave us information about my real father’s whereabouts,” I whispered, my heart racing faster and faster. Still, I couldn’t believe that either of my parents were alive. “All this time, I’d thought that they were dead. All this time, it had been a lie.”

“What’s the information?” Calder asked, almost as if he knew what was coming.

“The demons chained him decades ago up north in the ice. Thayer confirmed it with Xorgor that the demon queen—or the previous demon queen—had spoken about it to all those with royal blood.”

“So, what the fuck does that mean? You’re not leaving me, are you?”

“I’ve already talked with the others. I’m going to leave with Thayer and Gaian tomorrow night to find him, so I can spend tomorrow with you. Darius will stay to help you and Hellana out. We still haven’t been able to track the scent of her baby yet.”

I chewed on the inside of my cheek and stared at him, not wanting him to be upset with me. But how could he? This was my father, who had many secrets about the Paragons. My father, who I had never met.

Instead of yelling and screaming at me like I expected, Calder pressed his lips together and furrowed his brows, his eyes filling with tears. I rarely ever saw this man cry, but whenever he did … fuck, it broke me.

So fucking badly.

“Please, don’t go,” Calder said.
