“Ah, boy, I didn’t just open up the mountain and let you fall inside it. I created it.”

“You created the mountain?” I whispered in awe.

Thayer growled. “You made us walk all the way up the fucking mountain in the cold when you could’ve just made this land disappear so we could find you more easily? What the fuck was tha—”

Before he could say another word, I elbowed him hard in the ribs. “Shut the fuck up.”

If this was Sina’s father …

“Ah, it must have been hard for you to trek through the ice pits for three days. You can only imagine what it must’ve been like for the past couple decades. I’m sure you can understand why I used the little power I have left to make myself a warm home.”

While Thayer gritted his teeth, I yanked him back, so he wouldn’t attempt to kill Sina’s father. The cold had pissed him off just a bit too much, and I didn’t blame him. But we needed her father to save Calder.

“We’re here to help you escape from your chains and bring you to Durnbone.”

“Durnbone …” he hummed. “Haven’t heard of it.”

“It’s a town to the south, filled with monsters of all types.”

“And whose orders are these?” he asked. “How do I know you won’t try to kill me the moment you release me from these chains?”

“Because you’re a Paragon,” I said. “There is no defeating a creature as strong as you. If we attempt to kill you, you’d snap our necks and bury us in an avalanche outside. Unlike Thayer here, we’re not all that naive.”

Thayer growled at me. “Watch it.”

“We? All?” he said. “Have you brought more with you? Who is your leader?”

“We don’t have a leader.”

“Who’s your leader?” he repeated, the flames burning brighter.

“Sina.”

“Sina? And who is she?”

Thayer ripped himself away from me. “Sina is your daughter.”

Wind searedthe sides of my fucking face. I followed Gaian and Sina’s father through the icy snow fields on the path back home. We hadn’t had to say much to him after we admitted that Sina was this man’s daughter. His eyes had gone wide, and he’d immediately stood and walked with us out of the mountain after we released him.

Snow pounded down sideways around us, blocking my vision. With this kind of fucking weather, I was surprised that I hadn’t almost fallen on my ass and down the mountain again. I was trying to keep my focus while standing next to the father of the woman I loved.

I didn’t know what to fucking say to him. I wasn’t good with these kinds of things.

But … Gaian wouldn’t shut his mouth. They both went on and on and fucking on, all the way down the path that we had taken here. It was so fucking cold, and my fingers were about to freeze off, and these fuckers wanted to talk.

Of course, Gaian wanted to make a good impression. This was Sina’s father, and Gaian had to get him to believe that he was a good guy who didn’t just want to get into his daughter’s pants. And Sina’s father was eating up Gaian’s good-boy persona, like everyone did.

“Will you shut the fuck up?” I growled, canines lengthening past my lips.

Gaian shot me a look that told me to be quiet. Her father had more power than I’d thought. If he wanted to, he could break me in half with a snap of his fingers. And while I wanted to make a good impression too, all I cared about was actually making it back home to see Sina again.

What the fuck was this all for if we died out here?
