“I just wanted you to know,” I said.

“We know,” Darius said.

“No need to thank us, Pretty Bird,” Gaian said.

Thayer broke off the hug, grabbed my shoulders, and ushered me toward the estate. Only he and I were going toact likewe were sneaking around the property until someoneaccidentally caught us.

“You’ll kill him,” Thayer said once we were half a mile onto the estate. “Then, you’re not leaving the pack house until your belly is full with pups. You know, this is the last bit of freedom you will have for the next nine months, so make the most of it. Kill that motherfucking basta—”

“Are you talking about me?” someone hummed behind us.

At the sound of his voice, I froze. My heart thumped against his chest.

“I knew you’d finally return, sweetheart,” he purred. “Turn around and give your father a hug.”

Slowly, I turned around and spotted him standing a few yards away from me with his arms extended and at least ten guards surrounding him. Before we could even react, a bullet sped through the air and pierced through Thayer’s abdomen.

I didn’t doubt that it was a bullet laced with poison.

“Stop this,” I growled, wanting to help Thayer but knowing that he wouldn’t be hurt for long. He had taken some potion beforehand, so the poison should whiz through his system before we knew it. I glared at the man. “Now.”

“Stop?” He chuckled. “We’re just getting started, Sina.” He motioned to the guards. “Take her.”

I graspedmy bleeding abdomen and stumbled back a few feet, the poison seizing control of my body. My legs trembled, then suddenly gave out completely, and I hit the ground on my knees with a thud. Desperately, I tried to catch myself with my arms, but I couldn’t move them either, so I continued to fall face-first against the ground.

“Take him to the prison,” Sina’sfatherordered a guard. “Get as much information out of him as you can. They don’t leave anyone’s sight. There has to be more of them around here. They aren’t stupid enough to come alone.”

“Maybe we are,” I growled through my canines, glaring into the dirt because I couldn’t move even my head a couple of inches to the side. My entire body was stiff and numb, to the point where I couldn’t feel a thing.

But if Sina’s potion worked—gods, I hoped it did—then I wouldn’t be like this for long.

A large guard—way too big to be solely a human—picked me up and tossed me over his shoulder as if I weighed nothing. I seethed through my canines, loathing the fact that he was manhandling me, but not being able to do anything about it.

“Stop!” Sina cried, hurrying after me.

“I’m fine. I can move. Just playing the part,”I growled at her through the mind link, completely lying to ensure her safety. If she thought that I could defend myself, then she’d be able to think clearer and accomplish what she needed to accomplish. Plus, this shouldwear off soon, right? I stared back at her as they took me away.“Don’t follow—”

Before she could move another foot, herfatherseized her arm tightly and dragged her in the opposite direction. “You’re coming with me,dear. We havemuchto catch up on. I’m not letting you out of our sight again.”

“Be strong, Sina,”I said through the mind link.“For all of us.”

When she disappeared from my view, I growled and bared my canines at the man still walking with me down to the prison. I didn’t want to fucking be like this—useless and paralyzed while my mate was in danger.

Now, I fucking realized how Calder must’ve felt.

After a couple of moments, the guard entered the prison, which reeked of feces, and dumped me into a cell. He took one of my wrists and locked it up to a chain hanging from the ceiling, then did that with the other one too so I hung from my arms.

I glared at him as pins and needles pierced my flesh. “Let me out, you fucker.”

He chuckled darkly, walked over to a closet in the side of the room, and grabbed a knife. The silver blade glimmered underneath the dim cell light that hung overhead. Even from a distance, the silver repulsed me, made me ache all over.

But I could do nothing.
