“What is it?” Gaian asked.

“Sneak into Calder’s room and get me my diary back.”

A deep chuckle escaped my throat. “No can do.”

“Please, Darius,” she said, grasping on to my hand.

My entire body tensed, the feeling of her skin on mine making the hairs stand up on my arms. I stared at her softening eyes for a few moments, my breath caught in the back of my throat. Gaian might’ve been the nice guy, Thayer the psycho, and Calder the overbearing alpha with her, but all I was with her was a bit more nervous.

Nervous as fuck actually.

Because she hadn’t looked at me the same way she did with the other guys in high school. The other three had gotten some experience with her before her father took her away, so they were more comfortable with this feeling of being mated to someone. Me? I had to experience the loss of my mate by myself and in my own weird way.

I feared I would do all this shit wrong or that she wouldn’t like me the same way.

But her eyes had been saying otherwise since the moment she had looked at me in that dirty basement party. She might’ve been gravitating toward the others, too, but her hands were now on me, touching me, begging me.

After Gaian told her no too—because he wanted her just as bad as the others—she grasped on to me tighter, her fingers so much softer and smoother than any wolf I had been with these past few years. She watched Gaian walk into the house to shower and to prepare for later tonight when we’d enact another one of her diary entries.

“You got her?” Thayer called. “We gotta head to Durnbone to pick up some …things.”

While Sina rolled her eyes—oh, that woman had no idea what was coming—I nodded. They disappeared into the forest, heading toward Durnbone. Sina blew out a deep breath, released my hand, and sat back down on her picnic blanket.

Her lips were tugged into a frown.

I sat beside her, my legs grazing against her skin, and gently nudged her. “What’s up?”

“I …” She dragged a hand across her face. “It’s nothing.”

“What is it?” I asked again.

“They didn’t stop watching me like a hawk while you were gone. At least you and Gaian let me walk around the house alone. Those assholes followed me around, never letting me out of their sight once. It’s getting annoying.”

“They missed you,” I said.

She swallowed hard and looked over at me, her full lips now resting softly. “Did you?”

“Did I?” I asked, heart racing a bit faster, the nerves hitting me full force now.

I hadn’t been alone with her since she had gotten back into town, so I could hide my nerves and my feelings, especially during the chase last night when she had wanted us to wear masks and clothes that covered every inch of our bodies. She hadn’t known which one of the guys I was, which one wanted to devour every inch of her.

“Hmm?” she asked, her lips curling into a smile. “Did you?”

“Of course I did, Sina,” I said. “We’re best friends.”

Her face fell, the lightness in her eyes gone. “So … are you just doing this because you want to get back at my dad too? Because best friends don’t just refuse to give me back my diary and fuck me like you did last night.”

“No,” I said, scratching the back of my head and realizing that I had fucked up. “I … I’m not doing it just because of your father—or because of him at all. I’m really glad that you’re back in town. I’ve missed you a fuck-ton.”

She stared into my eyes, then pulled away her gaze. “You’re not just fucking with me?”

“No.”

“Good, because I don’t want my father to be part of my love life anymore,” she whispered.

“Anymore?”

She froze, as if she had said something wrong, then shook her head. “It doesn’t matter.”
