“Sina,” I whispered, still holding the wound. “I’m sorry. It’s complicated.”

Sina stormed upstairs to her bedroom and shut the door, leaving me to rot on the living room couch. I shuffled to my feet, bit back a howl, and followed her up the stairs because I didn’t want her to be angry with me. We werealwayson good terms.

When I pulled the door open, I caught Sina rummaging through her backpack. She glared up at me, then pulled out a container of glowing pink liquid.

“Is this what you guys have been hiding from me?” Sina asked, screwing off the cap.

“I said that it’s complicated, Sina.”

After marching right over to me, she put the jar of liquid to my mouth. “Take one small sip.”

“What is it?” I asked, eyeing it.

“It’s complicated,” she said, sending my own words right back to me—petty, as always.

But I didn’t mind it. We were the ones keeping this secret from her and the ones keeping that she was our mate from her. There had been so many fucking times that I just wanted to come out with it already. I just wanted to tell her, but we needed to keep her father out of our business.

The only way to do that and ensure her safety was to kill him. If she knew that she was our mate and mistakenly told her father, then he might hurt her worse than … he already had. I didn’t know what he had done to her these past few years, but I could tell it had fucked with her mind and made her furious.

As soon as the pink liquid hit my tongue, my wolf let out a feral growl. This tasted like vampire blood, mixed with some sort of … of witch’s brew or something. I couldn’t really tell exactly what it was, but my strength was becoming restored quickly.

“What is this stuff?” I asked again.

Instead of giving me another snippy response, Sina screwed the cap back on, stuffed it into her backpack, and shoved it underneath her bed. “My father used to …” She paused and licked her dry lips. “He used to sneak that green juice that you thought was wolfsbane into my drinks before I went to bed. It …”

When Sina’s voice broke, pain shot through my entire body. And not the kind from the bullet wound. This was emotional turmoil that Sina didn’t tell anyone about. But I had seen that pain more than once just in the past few days, especially after we went to the doctor.

“What’d he do?” I urged, tucking some hair behind her ear.

“That juice would paralyze me, so I couldn’t move for hours,” she whispered, glancing down at the ground with tears wavering in her eyes. Suddenly, she grabbed my hand and squeezed tighter than she ever had. “I couldn’t fight back. I couldn’t fight any of them back.”

“What do you mean any of—”

Before I could finish my sentence, Sina’s bedroom door was ripped off its hinges and thrust open.

Calder,Thayer, and Darius stood at my bedroom door and saved me from spilling all my secrets to Gaian. I wanted to tell someone so badly, especially after I caught my father using the same type of shit on Gaian, but I … I didn’t want to relive those nights again.

Calder stared at me through golden wolfish eyes. Thayer stood beside him, covered and dripping in blood from head to toe.

And Darius glanced between Gaian and me, brows furrowed, and said, “You okay, G?”

“Gis fine, thanks to me,” I said, crossing my arms over my chest and stepping forward before Gaian could say anything. I narrowed my eyes at Calder and pursed my lips. “Why didn’t you tell me you’ve been fighting my father?”

Calder cut his gaze to Gaian. “You fucking told her?”

I pushed my hands against his chest and shoved him backward. “Don’t talk to Gaian that way. He didn’t tell me shit. I figured it out myself. If you had just told me, I could’ve helped you all out.”

Calder grabbed my hands, so I couldn’t push him again. “He’s coming foryou.”

“I know he is,” I said between gritted teeth. “But I know what kind of shit he has experimented with. I know what he’s going to use in war against you guys—oranyonefor that matter. I could’ve freaking helped!”

“We don’t need your help,” Calder snapped. “You’re our—” Before he could finish his sentence, he stopped short and bared his teeth at me. “We’re supposed to fucking protect you, Sina. No matter what. He’s already taken you away once. He’s not going to fucking do it again while I’m alive.”
