“Get the pregnant woman to safety,” I ordered Gaian.

While Sina struggled for a couple more moments, I caught her right arm, and Thayer caught her left. Calder wrapped his hand around her chin and snapped her jaw shut so she couldn’t use her fangs on any of us.

Fear rushed through her eyes, yet it seemed like she couldn’t control it. She hadn’t been able to control herself through the heat either, but this was different. She seemed feral, like she had snapped and couldn’t seize back control.

“Please,” she whimpered, the word muffled.

Calder pressed his canines against her bloody neck and growled. “Stop this now, Sina, or I’ll rip my teeth into your throat and make you submit to me. And I know how much of a brat you like to be.”

“I-I can’t,” she whispered. “I can’t.”

“Sina,” Calder growled, his canines lengthening and pressing into her soft spot on her neck, where we would all mark her one day.

“Do it, Calder,” she whispered. “Please, end this. You have to—”

Before she could say another word, Calder sank his teeth into her neck and marked her.

Sina collapsed in my arms, eyes rolling back in her head and body suddenly relaxed. I pulled my teeth from her neck and shivered at the sight of the mark I had left on her body. From the day she had returned to Durnbone, I’d vowed not to mark her until … until I was ready.

If something happened to her now, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. I wasn’t ready, didn’t know if I would be ready anytime soon. But Sina had been freaking out, lashing out uncontrollably.

She had become an animal who desperately wanted to stop hurting us, but couldn’t.

“You … you marked her,” Darius said in disbelief, staring wide-eyed at an unconscious Sina.

Thayer and Gaian stared at us in shock too, the blood seeping down Thayer’s face still. But somehow, I felt even more shocked than them.

“Someone, grab the vampire and the woman,” I said. “Bring them both back to the pack house.”

“I’ll get Sina,” Gaian said, reaching to take her from my arms.

A low warning growl escaped my lips. “No.”

Gaian widened his eyes for a moment, and then his innocent expression turned a shade darker. He had always been the one that Sina gravitated toward, the one of us that she preferred, but she was my mate now. And my wolf wasn’t having another person touching her after we just laid our claim.

Once Gaian backed away, I lifted Sina into the air and started through the forest, back to our pack house, without saying good-bye to anyone at the party. It wasn’t like many people we cared about were here. Only Sina’s friends.

After Thayer said a few words to Xorgor—Sina’s friend’s boyfriend—he walked past the vampire and hurried toward me until he caught up. “What the fuck was that? You said you wanted to fucking wait.”

“I did.”

“So, what the fu—”

“She was lashing out,” I growled. “If I didn’t stop it, she would have torn your face off.”

“I wouldn’t have fucking let her do that. You just like to be the fucking savior, and it’s pissing me off.”

“If you had it under control, she wouldn’t have fucking wounded you!” I shouted, clutching Sina tighter. “Hell, I wouldn’t have been able to control her alone either, and I’m the fucking alpha of this pack. We work together to protect each other, Thayer.”

While I believed every word that I’d said, I couldn’t help feeling so … afraid. I had held this pack on my shoulders for four years, had tried so fucking hard to take their pain away. Now, I was the closest to Sina, and if something happened to her, I didn’t know if they would … take my pain away. I didn’t know if theycouldtake my pain away.

To my surprise, Thayer didn’t bitch back to me. Instead, he stayed quiet as we walked back to the pack house through the dark and foggy forest. Darius and Gaian lagged behind with the vampire and the pregnant woman. We needed answers from her.
