I watch the door, calibrating what she’s revealed. I snap shut his laptop and dart for the door, keeping my phone tucked into the crook of my neck.

“You better not be lying.”

“I’m not,” she gulps. “It… it was Polk. I was too old for Bernstein by the time I was given to the Mill.”

“Why have you kept this from me?”

“I didn’t know how to explain. It’s… it’s very complicated.”

“How so?”

“We… it… turned consensual.”

“Goodbye, Sasha.”

“Wait!” she exclaims in desperation from the other end of the phone. “I can prove everything I’ve said. Polk used me at the Mill. Then, when I was free, he tried to come back into my life, and… and my mind played tricks on me. I rationalized it and told myself it was okay if he wanted to be with me.”

“How can you prove it? Quickly. I have to go.”

Her breath is deep and audible. “Because of Bryce. Polk’s his father.”

Medjine and CouncilwomanFranklin are still locked into a never-ending conversation when I return from my fake trip to the restroom. I retake my seat and act like I haven’t been on a secret mission for the last fifteen minutes. In another twenty, we’re heading to the elevator, with Medjine telling me more about how insufferable Franklin is.

“But enough about that,” she says. “Where the hell did you go for so long?”

I blink. “Hmm?”

“You disappeared for a long time. I know you weren’t in the restroom all that time.”

“I saw some old coworkers,” I fib.

Though by the side glance Medjine casts me, I know she knows I’m lying.

“How’d it go?” Stitches asks. He opens the car door for me.

“About as expected. We have another stop to make.”

He catches my eye in the rearview mirror. “Which is?”

“I need you to take me to the Java King on Grant and Twenty-Fifth.”

“That’s halfway across town!”

“I can always take a taxi… or the subway.”

Stitches grumbles under his breath as he flicks on the car blinker and attempts to switch lanes. He has to take me, or else he’ll be disobeying Salvatore’s orders.

Normally, I wouldn’t make such an inconvenient request, but Sasha’s agreed to meet with me so she can tell me the truth.

The whole truth.

Her revelation has left my head spinning, though I should’ve seen it before.

If Polk took advantage of Sasha, it’s possible he did the same to others. If true, and he was one of the elites that took advantage of the sex slaves at the Mill, then I’ve got him.
