“Sasha!” I scream to the sound of the dial tone. “Shit.”

If Sasha does something stupid, then that all but destroys my chances of blackmailing Polk into dropping the charges against Salvatore.

I snatch my purse off my desk and flee from my office. Cirie calls out to me as I jog out the building door.

Fabio’s my security for the day. He sits in the car outside, fiddling with his phone and listening to music. He looks up only when I’m footsteps away.

“Mrs. Mancino, is everything okay?” he asks, promptly pocketing his phone.

“I need you to take me to city hall.”

“But what about Psycho—”

“Take me right now! It’s urgent!”

Fabio slams on the gas. The car shoots forward into the city street. We’re on our way. I only hope I can make it in time before Sasha does something stupid.

“Mr. Polk is a busy man. He’s currently in a meeting with someone,” Mrs. Upton says when I arrive. It’s several seconds before she bothers looking up from her computer screen. When she does, she balks. “You, again. I hope you don’t think you’re going to be allowed in. After the prank you pulled last time about the towed car—EXCUSE ME!”

The DA’s secretary screeches after me as I stride past her desk and toward the private office in the back.

“You can’t go in there!”

I wrap my hand around the doorknob and tug.

Locked.

My hand clenches into a fist that I pound on the door. “You’re in there, Polk. I know you’re with Sasha! Open up!”

“Are you insane?” Mrs. Upton shrieks from somewhere behind me. “I’m calling the building security.”

She’s nothing more than incessant background noise as I beat my fist against the door several more times. I know Polk is inside—I’ve used the hidden camera I installed in his office to verify his location. Sasha must already be with him because I can hear voices behind the door.

“Open right now!” I shout, banging hard. “Open or I’ll tell the whole building what you’ve done—”

“Alright!”

The door soars open, and I find myself opposite a red-faced Polk. He promptly steps aside to allow me access, then slams the door shut in Mrs. Upton’s face when she begins protesting.

“What do you want with me this time, Mrs. Mancino?” he bites out. “If you think you’ll finagle your way out of what’s happening to your husband—”

“Where’s Sasha?”

“She’s… she’s not here.”

Liar.

“I heard another voice.”

“You heard no such thing. It’s… it’s best you go,” he says stiffly.

“What’s going on? Was this some trap to lure me here? Are you two in some secret alliance? First you attempt to renege on our deal, then this stunt. I’m done playing games!”

“Mrs. Mancino, I urge you to leave. For… for your own good.”

“Or else, what? Your secretary will call security? Erick and I are friends.”
