“Or something,” I tease, coming closer and running my hands up under his shirt and feeling the hard planes of the thick muscles that make up his stomach and chest. “I want you.”

The last word has barely left my lips when Jake’s mouth crashes into mine. His tongue swiftly moves into the slight parting between my lips to sweep along my tongue and wind around it.

He tugs the edges of my t-shirt out of my jeans; the cool air hits my overheated skin and then his hands are shoving the flimsy material of my bra up. His hands are rough, strong, and so hot I feel like I’m on fire.

His tongue dives deeper into my mouth and my stomach cramps up and…

Oh shit!

Panicking, I break away from him and lunge in the direction of the kitchen, praying I make it to the sink in time and that it’s not filled with dishes.

One out of two isn’t bad and my eyes close in misery as I vomit all over Jake’s strainer full of dishes.

I’m spitting and gagging when hands sweep my hair away from my sweaty face and hold it back as I get sick again.

Groaning, I lay my flushed cheek against the cool metal of his sink. “I’m so sorry,” I moan.

“Shhh.. no biggie, princess. I’ve dealt with much worse. You think you can make it to the bathroom?”

I nod and the motion makes my head pound even worse. Carefully, Jake steers me into the bathroom. I sit in a heap on the floor, resting my head on my folded arms over the lid of the toilet. The sounds of running water fill the room and then a cool washcloth is wiping at my face. Blearily, I open my eyes, wincing at the bright lights. “Thank you.”

After cleaning my face, Jake disappears for a bit and when he returns, he helps me stand.

“Where are we going?” I ask, doing my best to keep my feet moving when all I want to do is lay down again.

“To bed.”

I must make some noise of protest because Jake chuckles. “I’m gonna sleep on the couch, princess.”

He gets me to the bedroom and once on the bed, I slump to the side and try to curl up, loving the cool feel of the sheets against my flushed skin.

“Hang on, let’s get these boots off.”

He tugs them off and then covers me with a blanket that’s lightweight and feels divine. I snuggle into the bed, breathing deeply of his scent and letting my worries float away.

A hand pushes my sweaty hair off my face and then from somewhere far away a door clicks closed, and I surrender to blessed silence.

CHAPTER SEVEN

SAVANNAH

“Wake up,” a husky voice croons.

Groaning, I curl my legs up tighter against my body and bury my face deeper into the pillow.

“Sorry, princess, but I gotta go in to work. They called me in and it’s time and a half.”

Who the voice belongs to registers a moment before his words sink in and then in a rush the events of last night come barreling back and I want nothing more than to dig a hole and hide in it. Since I can’t do that, I do the next best thing and pull the covers up over my head.

A heavy hand lands on my butt and pats it. “Hey, don’t sweat last night. It happens. And you can stay here as long as you need, but are you gonna be okay to get home?”

I’m so embarrassed and Jake’s so nonchalant about it, that surprisingly it makes me feel even worse. “I’ll be fine,” I say, keeping the blankets firmly over my head.

“Okay. I left some ibuprofen and a bottle of water on the nightstand. Help yourself to something in the kitchen before you leave. Take care, princess.” Another pat on my rump accompanies his words.

After a few moments when I don’t answer, the floor creaks as heavy footsteps pad away and then a door clicks. I stay with my head under the blankets until my rank barf breath forces me to toss them aside. Taking several gulps of fresh air, I stare up at the ceiling, my ears straining for any further sounds.

I don’t hear the front door close, but the roar of Jake’s truck is loud. So is the rumble of the engine as he drives away.
