Page 100 of Signature Of You

“What about whoever did this?”

“You’ll never have to worry about that. It’s handled.”

“And what about Gracie? These say she’s yours. Why would you want this? Why agree to claiming a kid that’s not yours?”

“Because it’s the only way I know to permanently fix things so that you never have to worry about anyone being in her life that you don’t want in her life.”

“What about you?”

I was looking at a very official DNA test that stated Sol was ninety-nine point nine percent my daughter’s father.

He leaned forward and lifted another folder and removed a document which he handed over.

I scanned the title and then moved further down. “This says I’ve signed over my parental rights to you. I have no claim to her. The only way I’m a part of Gracie’s life is if you allow me to be,” he said.

“I…this…” I closed my eyes and shook my head. “Thisis a lot.”

“This paperwork solves your problem with Dresden. At least one of them. We have a meeting set up to deal with everything else.”

“We?”

That meant I had to see him. Be in a room with the man who’d ruined my life.

Panic tightened in my chest. I knew this day would come but no matter how I mentally tried to prepare myself, I wasn’t.

“He wants to meetyou, but Drew told him the only way that happens is if we’re there too. You, me, my lawyer, and Drew.”

“About the contracts?”

“Yeah, the shit is fake. We all know he forged your signature and if he wants to take it to court, the so be it. We fight the case. He’s not even pushing for the contracts or the money he claims you owe him though. His main reason for demanding a meeting is…”

“Gracie.”

Jaasir nodded. “And not because he wants anything to do with her. He only wants access to you. If Gracie is his, he has access to you and that shit’s not happening.”

“Which is why you did this.”

My eyes lowered to the paperwork in my hands.

“Yeah, look, I’m not trying to back you into a corner. You already know I want you here but I also understand it’s not that simple for you. I’m never going to use any of this against you….” He pointed to the DNA test. “That’s why I had my lawyer draw up the parental rights paperwork. I need you to trust that nobody can take her from you. Not even me. I didn’t know any other way to keep my promise.”

“But can’t he contest this? What if he demands a judge to give him a DNA test and it turns out she’s his?”

“I looked into all that. Once an official test is on record claiming paternity, there’s nothing he can do. Not unless he can prove that this one isn’t real and he won’t be able to do so.”

“But he has money too. You don’t think he can call in favors the same way you did to get this.”

“It’s possible but not likely. He doesn’t want Gracie. He wants you. Dresden is married and his wife isn’t on board with any outside children. Especially not one with you. She knows the history between the two of you.”

Who the hell would want to be attached to me?

“Why would you want any parts of this?”

“Because I don’t give a fuck about any of that. Everyone has a past, Cadence. I’m no saint. I have shit I’m attached to that you shouldn’t want any parts of either. Nobody’s perfect but we all deserve redemption.”

I struggled with believing I did at times but I knew it was true.

“What makes you think anyone will believe this? We just met.”
