I stepped out of Gracie’s room, pulling the door closed but being sure to leave it slightly cracked. Her rule, which I’d promised to abide by.

My baby was a big girl who still needed to make sure I had access to her and she had access to me. That meant not completely shutting Gracie in her room when she was asleep.

By the time I made it back to my room, Val was waiting, dressed for her shift at The Bottom. Revealing top, tight jeans, heels that weren’t meant for comfort.

I was off tonight, only taking a few shifts a week just to help out and bring in extra money.

“Are you ready to talk about this?” She cautiously watched me as I climbed on the bed, propping my back against the headboard.

She tried to talk about what happened at the diner earlier but I refused. I had already skipped out on Gracie for the day so I didn’t want anything to take time away from our pancake dinner.

I made Val promise not to tell me what she knew about Jaasir because it was clear she knew something. Something that was going to change my perspective about the man who I’d had the perfect day with.

Nodding she extended her phone and I held my breath while I took it in my hand and peered at the screen.

My eyes shot up to hers a few seconds later and she confirmed the questions I didn’t ask. I kept scrolling, article after article. I didn’t bother to read any of them, only the headlines.

Multi-platinum artist Sol faces assault charges that might land him behind bars.

Will Sol be dropped from his label pending his current legal troubles with Lit Productions?

Sol goes into hiding. Sources say that he’s recording his new album.

Hiding. That had to be why he was here. The pictures of him looked different but the same. His hair was cut low and so was his beard but those same stormy brown eyes, tempting lips were there enhancing that handsome face.

Broad shoulders, solid chest, and slim waist hidden beneath expensive clothes. Those arms, littered with tattoos that told stores of their own, were on display while muscles flexed beneath them from the way he cuffed the microphone that hovered near full lips curled into a sexy smile.

Different but the same.

“I don’t want to see this.” I tossed her phone on the bed and she gave me that look. That same sympathetic look she’d given me when I showed up five years ago pregnant with Gracie.

“You might not want to see those articles but we have to talk about what they mean. He looked familiar. I just couldn’t place him. The hair and the beard are all new but it’s him.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It matters, Cadee. I saw the way you looked at him and the way he looked at you…”

“You don’t need to worry. I promise there’s nothing with us. Now go or you’re going to be late.”

She stared at me not saying the things I could see on the tip of her tongue. “Cadee…”

I shook my head. “Tomorrow. We’ll talk about it then. Right now, I just want to shower and get in bed. It’s been a long day.

“It’s only eight.”

“Yeah and I’ve been up since six, go.”

She nodded, lifting her phone and climbing off the bed, staring at me for a long minute. “You’re allowed to be happy, Cadee. Even if it’s not with him, you’re allowed to have something more than Gracie.”

“I know that.”

“Do you?”

No.

“Go, before your mother blames me for you being late.”

“Yeah, like she doesn’t already have enough to complain about.”
