She tensed and deliberation played through her expression. Scowling, she exhaled heavily, frustration flashing behind her eyes. “I’m trying to do the right thing. If I don’t walk away now, I’ll never be strong enough to because the more I’m with you, the deeper I’m going to fall.”

Me too.

But I don’t fucking care.

“It’s not just you. I’m falling too and if I fall, I’d prefer it be with you. Don’t try to make it make sense. Forget about anything but how your body feels. How you feel. Let that be enough. We’ll figure out the rest. Can you do that for me?”

“No…” She released a ragged breath and my stomach twisted at the thought of me not having her. “But I can do it for me.”

Everything settled.

“This isn’t about you, Jaah. It won’t be about you. Only me. What I want, what I’m going to take, and what you’re going to give. As long as you can handle those terms then I’m in.”

“Whatever you want.” My voice was rough already knowing that this woman could take anything I had and I wouldn’t care as long as she let me have her. Temporarily or not, I just had to have her.

“Fine, now go. I have to get back to work.” She pushed me away. Gently, but it was still an assertion of her dominance. She needed to be in control and I would give her that, for now…

“What time are you done here tonight?”

“Three but I…”

“I’ll come back.”

I turned to leave and just before I pushed through the door she spoke again. “Jaah, I know you said that you can break me but just know that it’s possible that I might break you too…”

I glanced over my shoulder and her gaze met mine. There was a flash of ire in her depths before she turned to walk away.

The warning had been delivered, but I didn’t care.

Cadence.

When I stepped out into the muggy cover of nightfall I tucked my chin to hide my smile. He came back. I hadn’t imagined Jaasir would be the type of man to give his word and not follow through but a part of me half expected he wouldn’t show.

“You’re here.”

“I told you I would be.”

“People say things.”

He wanted to make me promises. I wanted him to keep things like they were. Temporary. So when he didn’t I relaxed.

“You need to check on Gracie?”

“No, she’s with Val. When my shifts run late, hers end early so that Gracie doesn’t have to stay with the babysitter all night.”

“Okay to spend a few hours at my place? I’ll make sure you’re home before she’s up in the morning.”

He took a step toward me and I moved down off the curb. “That’s a big promise to make. Gracie’s usually up by seven.”

His smile expanded. “I only need a few hours. Before seven is doable.”

“A few hours to do what?”

“You.”

“Is that the only reason you came back?”
