“Who the heck has a New Year’s Eve Party, not on New Year’s Eve?” I exclaim as we file into the cab. Dylan grabs the end of my dress, careful not to step on it.

“I think it’s so we can spend New Year’s Eve with our partners or family.”

“You are my family.” I smile.

“You’re mine.” She smiles back.

“I still wish we didn’t have to go,” I admit. I like being able to say that out loud now.

“I know, I’d much rather spend the night wrapped in your arms, but it’s important that I go. I promise we don’t have to stay the entire night though.”

“Thank you.” It isn’t that I hate parties or anything, it is just that once you’ve been to one you’ve been to them all. It is quite repetitive and feels like a waste of Dylan’s and my time. Now that we are together, I want to do fun things with her. Take her on adventures, not get stuck at a stuffy work party.

Although the clothes are a huge plus. Dylan loves to spoil me and I love to be spoiled, so the clothing budget is something she wanted me to keep. After all, I am dressing to impress her clients and friends anyway. I mostly spend it on outfits to make her eyes pop out of her head or lingerie that she gets to rip to shreds.

I will be moving out early next week and although I am sad about not waking up in Dylan’s bed every morning, I am happy to get back to my own space. I only have one semester left in college and I intend to make the most of it. I won’t be partying or skipping classes but keeping my 4.0 GPA and hanging out with Sara. And well, making it up to Sara since she isn’t the happiest that I quit with no notice. But it isn’t like she knows the whole story yet. I figure once she does, it will make sense to her. I mean I didn’t plan on falling in love with Dylan but here I am. I just couldn’t stay in a situation where she was paying for me when it was clear we both had such strong feelings for each other.

“We’re here,” the cabbie says, and Dylan pays him before helping me out of the cab. The party is at her job again, and a flicker of hope flashes through my eyes when I think about the possibility of running up to her office for a quickie. I silently wonder how she gets any work done while knowing what we did on her desk. Then again, she hasn’t been back to work since then so I guess she’ll find out come Monday morning.

“What are you thinking about? You’re blushing and smirking,” Dylan whispers in my ear.

“Just about the last time we were here.” I bite down on my bottom lip.

“Oh.” Now Dylan is the one blushing.

“Come on, don’t want to keep the people waiting,” I tease and lead her into the party. It’s just like all the other ones we’ve been too and the wow factor has left for me. No longer am I impressed at these sort of things but it has me questioning how much excess party money one company could have.

Dylan shuffles me around the room, talking to the same people we usually do and some new authors that her and Lucy have just signed on. I don’t read much so the art of meeting new authors is a little bit lost on me but I do appreciate their talent. I don’t think I could ever just sit down and write a book, that must take a lot of talent and dedication. But when I see Lucy and Morgan kissing in the corner, it makes me relieved to know the two of them are still together.

“Well would you look at who it is,” I tease, walking up to Morgan.

“It’s so good to see you.” Morgan smiles, wrapping her arms around me.

“Lucy,” Dylan says and they nod at each other, not being quite as affectionate as my best friend and I are. I bet they’ve never been confused for a couple before.

“Have you seen Lefts? Is he still sporting the blonde? I need to mentally prepare myself for that if so.” Dylan chuckles.

“He’s gone back to his normal color actually, and he brought a date with him. I think she might be a hooker though. Someone said he paid her to come.” Lucy says this as a fact, not in any tone of judgment, and I wonder if she guessed the truth about us. Were we as obvious as Lefts and his date?

“Oh okay.” Dylan shuffles uncomfortably.

“Where are they?” I ask, and Lucy looks around the room before pointing casually across the room.

That’s when I have to keep myself from bursting out in laughter. Across the room is none other than Sara, my roommate on the arm of Dylan and Lucy’s boss. Clearly she’s paid to be here but how she guessed that is beyond me. If I looked at them I’d actually say they were a good fit together. Sara always goes for younger but wealthier men who can shower her in gifts. By the necklace she is wearing and the dress I’ve never seen before, it is clear to me that he is already providing some extra to his package.

“Isn’t that?” Morgan starts but I nod quietly and shush her. Lucy looks between us but doesn’t ask and Dylan looks just as confused.

“Well, we have to make our rounds with him, don’t we?” I remind Dylan.

“Oh yes, I’ll see you guys later.” She smiles and we walk toward her boss.

“That’s Sara, as in my roommate Sara. So he’s working with Madame Angelica too,” I whisper to Dylan. Her eyes widen and just as quickly she composes herself.

“Okay. We’ll have to play it cool then, I don’t want him to know about you,” Dylan explains.

“Of course, especially now that it doesn’t matter,” I point out.
