“It is.” I groan. “So are you from the city?”

“I am, born and raised New Yorker. But I don’t want to talk about that.” He waves away my question.

“Well, I’m all ears, what would you like to talk about?” I smile. I like this, that I don’t even have to fake my enjoyment with Jerry. I just genuinely like talking to him and I hope it is mutual. It seems like my career as an escort is hanging in the balance with how he perceives me.

“Tell me why you’re choosing to become an escort.” He surprises me with how he looks at me. There is no judgment on his face, just curiosity.

“I need money to pay for college. I’m on a scholarship right now but that ends soon and I need money for rent and tattoos and things that I can’t afford,” I say truthfully.

“Does the job scare you?” he asks, studying my face.

“A little,” I admit.

“What parts?”

“Well, the people I go out with might not always be as nice as you are.”

“I’m the way to ease girls into the job. I know it, and Angelica sure knows it too. I don’t mind it.”

“Have you always seen escorts?” I ask but immediately want to take it back. “I’m sorry if that’s too personal.”

“Not at all.” He takes a deep breath and pauses. “I was once almost married to a beautiful woman but she broke my heart and since then I haven’t found anyone, and I’m a lonely man.”

“I’m so sorry.” I reach for his hand and he smiles.

“Nah, don’t be. I’m content with this being my life. I have family but no one I can talk to like I talk to like Angelica’s girls.” I guess that’s what I am now,one of Angelica’s girls.

“That makes sense.” I sip the wine and take a bite of the food that’s just arrived. It’s just as delicious as the wine is. A steak that must be from the most delicious cow I’ve ever tasted is paired with mashed potatoes and a creamed spinach to die for. I’ll have to work off this meal at the gym this week but it is worth it. It is too tasty not to have every bite.

“I love a girl with an appetite. Your friend, Sara, is the same way.”

“Do some of the girls not eat?” I ask, raising an eyebrow.

“Some do, some just pick. I can’t always tell if it’s nerves or that they don’t want to mess with their figure. It’s not like Angelica is like some of the madams out there, she’s pretty open for all types of women.” That is good to know, because if every date had this much food, I might go up a jean size or two.

“I see.” I nod.

The rest of the night is uneventful. Besides the most delicious chocolate cake I’ve ever tasted, Jerry talks most of the night about his job, and I do a lot of listening. Sara was right, he is easy to talk to but also he commands most of the conversation which makes it easier on me. Jerry waits until Sara’s date is over and then brings me to her like I’m a child being switched between divorced parents. It is sweet how much Sara is concerned about me, but if things are how they went tonight, I’ll have no problem continuing.

“So, how was it?” she prompts on the way home.

“It was fun actually,” I admit with a smile.

“I told you, Jerry is the best.”

“Did you have fun?”

“Eh, it’s a little repetitive after a while. But the guy was nice. You didn’t have leftovers?” She looks at my empty lap.

“No, it was too good to save any.” I laugh.

“Good, Jerry likes a girl who enjoys a meal he’s paying for.”

“Do most guys?”

“It depends, you can usually tell the assholes who make comments about how much you’re eating. But that’s never affected my pay. They care more about the kind of conversation you’re having,” she explains.

“Okay.” I am learning so much from Sara. It feels like I am learning how to act around men after avoiding dating them for so long. It is almost ironic.
