“Ready to pick up your EV?” he asked.

“We are,” I said. “Remember where we left it?”

“I still have it in my GPS. I hope the plows haven’t made it impossible to move.”

“Shovels in the rear?”

“We might need them.”

“I’ll shovel,” Emily said as we rolled away from the house.

“I know you will,” Codrin said. “You’re very strong.”

“I am. I help mom a lot.”

“She does,” I added. “Keeps her busy.”

The EV was where I had parked it. Three other cars were in the lot also. However, someone had been there ahead of me and cleared a lane to the street. I silently thanked whoever it was. We cleared the windows before I started the car. As is suspected, the battery was dangerously low. I was pretty sure I had enough power to get home as long as I didn’t turn on the heater or the lights.

“Enough juice?” Codrin asked.

I nodded.

“I’ll follow you just in case.”

“Thanks. You bring Emily? Your SUV will be warmer.”

“Sure. Emily, you want to ride with me?”

“Up front?”

“Absolutely.”

I was careful to start slowly. I didn’t want to slip and slide my way into the street, which was almost down to the pavement. Codrin came behind. The trip was short, much shorter than I remembered from the night of the storm. I pulled into the garage and climbed out. Codrin and Emily were right behind.

“Hey,” I said as they climbed out of the SUV. “Want to stay for dinner?”

“Wish I could,” Codrin said. “I have a lot of work waiting for me at home.”

“Oh, sure, me too. See you at work.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

I watched him drive off. Even as I did, I spotted Sylvester standing in his driveway, looking at my still-snow-covered sidewalk.

“Come on, Emily, let’s finish the sidewalk before our neighbor has a fit.”

“I don’t like him,” she said.

“I don’t think anyone does.”

“I wish Codrin would have dinner with us.”

“I do too. Maybe next time.” I grabbed my shovel and started for the snow. “Maybe next time.”

Chapter nine

Returningtoworkwasalmost a surreal experience. It seemed everyone had suffered some sort of damage from the blizzard, and it was all most people wanted to talk about. I knew it would be the topic of conversation for a while—until the next disaster occurred. That was one thing about life. Disasters arrived on a regular basis. It seemed we didn’t learn from them either, as they always engendered fear. I did my best to reinstate the normal. Codrin might have helped if he hadn’t reverted to Dracula.
