He laughed. “Give my regards to your daughter. I take it she’s doing well.”

“Very well.”

I was halfway to the basement conference room when my phone chirped.

Marcie.

Chapter twelve

“Marcie, whatisit?”I asked, expecting the worst. “Is Emily OK?”

“She’s fine. He’s here.”

“Who?”

“Dracula. He’s here. He wants to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“He didn’t say. Are you coming home soon? Right now, he’s playing a game with Emily. He’s nice, and that’s even scarier than before.”

“He’s different when he’s not at work. Tell him I’ll be there in an hour. I still have some work to finish.”

“Hold on. I’ll tell him.”

I kept walking, listening, waiting for Marcie to come back.

“You’re sure?”

“Codrin?”

“Yes, it’s me. Are you going to be there for another hour?”

“Yes, so you can go home if you want. Marcie will stay with Emily until I get back.”

“That’s good because I am leaving your house. I’ll be in your office in twenty minutes.”

“You’re coming to the bank? Why?”

“I want to talk to you, and I’m leaving in the morning. Will you wait till I get there?”

“Sure, sure, I’ll be in my office. We can’t do this on the phone?”

“I don’t think so. Want me to stop for coffee?”

“No, I had some already. Hey, do I need to prep myself for something?”

“No, I just want to talk to you in person. Bear with me. Can you do that?”

“I’ll be here. Put Marcie on?”

“See you soon.”

I waited a few seconds.

“He’s gone,” Marcie said. “He’s scary. I…I had a hard time breathing.”

“He does that to people. Did he give you any idea why he wants to talk to me?”
