“I need you to come with me. You don’t have to say a word. Just be behind me, like you’re backing me up, OK?”

“Want me to look mean?”

“No, no, that’s not necessary. No smiles, though. We have to appear serious.”

“I’m as serious as toenail fungus.”

“Eewww, that’s not exactly what I had in mind.”

The music stopped, and I squeezed his hand before I started for the table. The ambush had to be sprung quickly and thoroughly. There could be no time for the people involved to think.

“Hello, Josh,” I said as soon as I reached the table. “I’d say Merry Christmas, but I’m wondering what you’re doing here.”

A smarmy smile spread Josh’s face. He had anticipated the challenge.

“I’m a guest,” Josh said. “Misty invited me, right, Misty?”

Misty was fifty-something, overweight, and dressed in a tight dress of red and green sequins. She looked as if she had come straight from some all-you-can-eat buffet.

“I did invite him,” Misty said. “The email said I could bring a guest.” Misty looked past me to Codrin. I guessed Misty was wondering why he had come with me.

“Don’t get me wrong,” I said. “I’m glad you brought Josh. It saves me the effort of chasing him down.”

Josh’s smile didn’t break. I had to give him credit for that.

“Josh, how did you manage to connect with Tyra Green?”

“I don’t know who you’re talking about?”

“Your mistake was persuading her to go to the shareholders. You did that once before, and it blew up in your face. Why did you think it would work this time?”

“If you think you can intimidate me with your caveman boyfriend, you’re kidding yourself. I don’t work for the bank anymore, remember? I’m not privy to whatever information I’m accused of doing something with.”

“That’s correct. You enlisted Misty in your plan. She’s been supplying the info.”

“I have not,” Misty said. “I would never do that.”

“You’ve been calling Josh several times every day for several weeks.”

“I like talking to Josh. And I do it on break or at lunch. He’s a friend.”

Josh smirked.

“True. I can’t prove otherwise. It’s the emails that give you away.”

“I never email Josh.”

“No, you email yourself from your work computer. Then, you forward that mail to Josh.”

Misty’s face paled. The smirk fled Josh’s face.

“She’s bluffing,” Josh said. “She’s got nothing.”

I pulled out my phone and tapped it. “This really was too simple. I posted a note on the project site that said everyone at the other bank would be replaced before Easter. Misty picked up the note, sent it to you, Josh, and you handily moved it along to Tyra. Here is her latest Twitter feed.”

I showed them my phone. Sure enough, Tyra’s post said everyone would be canned by Easter.

“Shit,” Misty said.
