I’m offered a glass of champagne, which I gladly take. It gives me something to concentrate on.

“Come … let’s go back into the other room and have a chat.” She escorts us back to her girlfriends before asking me to sit by her on a gorgeous salmon-pink, velvet chaise lounge.

Thank goodness I have this glass of champagne to stop my hands from shaking.

“Tell us what your dream wedding would look like, Rosalie?” the queen asks as the other women nod enthusiastically. They all stare at me in silence waiting for me to tell them what I want.

“I haven’t thought about it,” I confess honestly.

There’s an audible gasp throughout the room.

“You haven’t thought about colors or food … or even the dress?” the queen asks before looking around at her minions as if I have sprouted a second head.

“If I’m honest, I never thought I would have a choice. That whoever I was betrothed to would make all the choices and decisions.”

The queen’s face softens in understanding as she reaches out and taps my leg. In this world, women are commodities for our families.

“My mother-in-law was like that,” the queen whispers. “And I vowed I would never do that to my daughter-in-law-to-be.” She gives me a genuine smile. “We all know”—she looks around the room—“that not all of us are lucky enough to marry for love.” The women nod. “That doesn’t mean you can’t have the wedding you so eagerly desire.”

I look over at my sister and she too is surprised that I’ve been given a choice.

“The only thing I thought about was my sisters being my bridesmaids and that Henrietta could maybe … walk me down the aisle,” I explain.

“Henrietta?” the queen asks, confused that she might have missed someone from my household.

“She was our nanny. When our mother died, she looked after us. She’s like a surrogate mother to me,” I explain.

The queen nods in understanding. “A little unconventional, but I can’t see why not.” She gives me a grin, making me feel so much lighter.

Skylar looks over at me and smiles too.

“This is a great start,” she praises me as a staff member behind her takes notes on a regal-looking notepad with their royal emblem embossed in gold at the top.

We spend the rest of the afternoon looking at color samples and material swatches, sampling food, looking at place settings, and a hundred other things until I’m utterly exhausted. Eventually, the other ladies exit the room. Skylar excuses herself too, giving me time alone with the queen.

“Thank you for today,” she says as she sips on her glass of champagne. “I enjoyed our time together.” She reclines back against the chair, looking a little more relaxed now everyone has left.

“Thank you for including me.”

She nods in acknowledgment. “May I ask a personal question?” she starts.

“Of course.” I take a small sip of my champagne.

“Is my son really gay?”

Umm, that isnota question I thought she would be asking.

“Or does he truly like both men and women?” Her blue eyes widen with curiosity.

Okay, well, this has officially turned awkward.

How do I explain to my future mother-in-law that her son likes eating pussy as much as he enjoys sucking dick?

Silence fills the room while I try and work out exactly how to explain our scenario.

“As a mother, I’m worried I’m pushing my son into something he doesn’t want because of social conventions. I know that neither of you have a choice, still has his mother not his queen I’m worried about the decision,” the queen adds.

“Augustine loves Greyson … withallhis heart, but he does also like women,” I tell her honestly.
