Maybe the prince wasn’t serious anyway.

Why on earth would they pick me when they have their pick of the most beautiful women in the world?

“Where’s Jane?” Magnolia asks as we don’t see her anywhere and she is always right beside Henrietta.

Henrietta’s face pales. “I tried to get to her, but the smoke was too much.” Tears well in her eyes.

Oh no. No. Jane can’t be dead.

“She’s dead?” Skylar asks.

“Oh, sweet girl, no, sorry the shock has gotten to me. She is over at the ambulance, she was pulled out of her room, alive but with smoke inhalation.” Henrietta points over at the red and white flashing lights.

“We should go check on her,” Magnolia says to Henny.

“Yes, I’m sure she would be pleased to see you all,” she says, walking us over too. Reaching the ambulance, the paramedics’ eyes widen when they see the three of us.

“Jane is doing well, she has an oxygen mask on her, it was close. We believe she should be at hospital, but she is refusing to go,” the paramedic explains.

“We’ll talk to her,” Magnolia says, reassuring the medic that we will try our best to help them do their job. The paramedic looks relieved and gives us some space.

“Jane, how are you feeling?” Magnolia asks, taking a seat beside her on the ambulance gurney.

Jane pulls her oxygen mask off her face. “You're Highnesses, what are you doing here? You should be at the ball.”

“We came home because of the fire, to make sure that you and all the staff were okay,” Magnolia answers gently.

“You didn’t need to worry about me, I’ll be fine,” she says, waving our concerns away.

“We were so worried about you, Jane,” Henrietta says softly.

“I know, Henny,” she says, giving her boss a small smile.

“What happened?” I ask.

Jane shakes her head as she takes a couple of big lungfuls of oxygen before taking her mask off again. “All I know is I was in my bed sipping my tea and fell asleep, the next thing I know, someone is dragging me out of my bed and into the corridor. I was disorientated. The smoke was thick. When I woke up again, I was here in this ambulance.”

My sisters and I all look between us.

“You haven’t been feeling unwell, Jane, have you?” Magnolia asks.

“No, I’m fit as a fiddle, Your Highness.”

Magnolia frowns.

“Do you think someone drug you?” Skylar asks her.

“No, why would they do that?” Jane says.

Everyone falls silent as her question settles in, my father has a lot of enemies, a lot of powerful ones, it could have been a possibility.

“We need to take Jane to the hospital, Your Highnesses,” the medic states.

We all take a step back from Jane and give her a wave as the medics do their jobs. We watch as the red and white lights of the ambulance drive away.

“We could have lost Jane, Magnolia,” Skylar says angrily, and she’s right if things had gone a different way, we would have lost a beloved member of our household.

“Fucking Valerius,” Skylar curses.
