My father glares at me, he knows I’m not telling the truth. “And the prince likes this girl?”

“He does, she’s perfect for him. For us.”

His brows raise high on his forehead at my comment. “Do not tell me you are stupid enough to think of sleeping with the future queen?” he hisses at me.

Little late for that, Father.

“Why are you so stupid, boy? Do you think you and the prince will now be able to live happily ever after with her in the picture? Are you that naïve?”

I refuse to answer him.

“You know that the prince’s priority will always be her and she, him. Especially once they are a family.”

Of course, I know this. I’m choosing not to think about it as the pain is unbearable envisioning Auggie and Rosalie together, cradling their golden-haired children, looking every inch the happy family that they will be. And me standing in the shadows, always looking on.

“I love you, Greyson, but you and Auggie can’t be together anymore. The king will not allow it. He has let the two of you have your fun but you both need to grow up. The prince is now engaged. You are his guard. What the two of you once had, can no longer exist. Otherwise, this will be your downfall, son.”

I know my father loves me and is trying to protect me, and I know he doesn’t understand that the love between Auggie and me is true and I’m used to listening to people’s hurtful words, but he has brought all my fears to the forefront, and I have been enjoying pushing them down deep inside of me hoping to never have to deal with them.

“What happens if Rosalie is all for Auggie and I being together?” I ask him.

“She might be okay with it now, seeing as you are all strangers, but as the years roll on and they continue to grow into a family she may not be so accommodating.”

“And if she wants both of us, equally?”

“Fuck, Grey, please don’t tell me that is what you are planning. The king will not allow this. He will not allow the chance that the children the future queen produces are not legitimate heirs,” he hisses at me as he runs his hand through his salt-and-pepper hair angrily.

“We would be careful.”

“It would never be one hundred percent, Greyson.”

I know he’s right and I hate it. Auggie has already fucked her bare last night and I used a condom too. We don’t even know if she is on the pill or not, that wasn’t one of the questions we asked. We probably should if we are going to continue what is happening between us all.

“Be careful, son, the king has eyes and ears all over this palace. He will eventually find out that the three of you are planning on being together. I assure you he will not hear it from me.”

“What am I supposed to do? I love him.”

“If one sister was willing to make a deal, then maybe the other would be interested too,” he says, shrugging his shoulder.

I could never do that to Rosalie. And Skylar would never do that to her sister either.

“I could never. That isn’t an option,” I tell him.

“It’s been a couple of days, you can’t be attached to the woman already,” he says, rolling his eyes at me.

I may not be in love with Rosalie but there will come a time that I may be and marrying her sister is not the way for all of us to be together.

“If you don’t marry her, do you think Valerius Carandini isn’t going to sell her off to one of his friends? You could save her from a horrific life,” my father suggests.

His words still me.

“That’s not fair,” I warn him.

“Life isn’t fair, boy. Just know that the king will push for this union between her sister and you if you don’t watch yourself. The slightest whiff of controversy between you and the princess and he will have you married off to her sister or someone else he desires.”

“Is that why you wanted to have this lovely father-son chat today?” I ask as I glare at him.

“Yes. The king will not tolerate it. He is already losing his mind over the fact that he chose Rosalie, her family’s name is scandal enough. Anything else will tip him over the edge and you know how he gets.”
