“And yet here we are discussing it.”

My father shakes his head at me again, disappointment shining through. “But …” He points his finger at me. “… if what happens between your sheets affects the crown, then you’re sure as hell not going to like what I am capable of.”

A shiver runs down my spine.Did he just threaten Greyson?

“Threaten me all you want, but remember you trained me to be just likeyou.” My father’s eyes narrow as I stand and button my suit jacket. “Youwillbe respectful to my fiancée tomorrow night at dinner. You willnotmake Rosalie feel unwelcome or embarrass her with the supposed details you know about our relationship.”

“Do not force my hand, Augustine.”

“My love, please don’t talk like that.” My mother sighs.

“He won’t listen any other way, Katherine. You too are against the three of them. Do not paint me out to be the bad one here.”

I turn and look at my mother, surprised that she is against my happiness; I always thought she understood me.

“I love you, Augustine, and I love Greyson as if he is a second son. And I can see how much the two of you love each other …”

“But?”

“But … you are the future king of Friendsburg and unfortunately that comes with sacrifice. We have all had to make them,” she states, looking toward my father, who’s surprised by my mother’s comment. Hurt flashes across my father’s eyes for a millisecond before his coldness is back.

“We all did, Katherine,” he says coldly.

My mother sits up straighter in her chair and plays with some imaginary lint on her dress. I’m not sure what happened between the two of them, but it seems like I might have opened some old wounds.

“You’re dismissed, Augustine,” my father says with a wave of his hand.

He doesn’t have to tell me twice as I walk out of his office and run right into Joss who is standing diligently beside the office door.

“Did you hear that?” I ask Joss as he closes the door to my father’s office behind me.

“Yes, I did, Your Highness. And I thank you for standing up for my boy in there, but your father is right.”

Disappointment fills me as another person isn’t happy with the future I see for myself, for us.

“I know you love my son, Your Highness,” Joss says, looking down at the floor.

“Sounds like there’s a but coming there, Joss?” I question him.

“If things change between the two of you …”

I’m ready to argue with him, saying that nothing between Greyson and I will ever change, but I let him finish.

“Will you let my son go and find his own happiness?” he asks me.

Well, crap. I wasn’t expecting that. My heart constricts at the idea of giving up Greyson, but I understand where his father is coming from; he is looking after his son, and if I’m honest, Greyson does have the short straw in this scenario.

“Are you able to achieve happiness with my son while having a wife?” he asks.

He has valid concerns. The optimist in me is thinking happily ever after, but the pessimist in me knows that happily ever after between the three of us might never be unachievable.

“My son wants a family of his own one day, and I worry that he won’t be able to have that because he’s devoted to you,” Joss explains.

I know Greyson is family-driven, he loves children and children love him, but we never really thought about having a family because we knew it was never a possibility. But now that I have a chance, how can I deny Greyson something he’s always desired?

“Rosalie has offered her eggs to Greyson so we could have children together, once we have birthed an heir.”

Joss stumbles back at my admission. “Your father would never allow it.”
