Except her steps were already outside the door, and I was twitching in my seat, body desperate to rise and charge, to meet her. To snatch her up. To taste her again. To press her into me and dig my teeth into her flesh and claim my mate.

The door handle clicked, and sunlight streamed in through the crack. I growled at the shadow on the floor until the door opened enough for the shadow to reach the feet, the legs, the bright yellow sundress.

"Oh!" Sunny paused in the doorway, eyes wide on me. "You're already here."

I should've spoken. Greeted her. Told her I'd been waiting for her for four weeks, and it might've been less if she hadn't called MSA first.

I only growled, my entire body straining not to leap across the space.

Her surprise softened into something sweeter briefly, and then a little fold appeared between her eyes. Worry? Or that ache she'd revealed the night in the woods?

"Khell," she said, far too timid.

My control snapped, and her eyes flared wide again as I shot into motion, everything blurring but my need to be on her. In her.

She gasped as I reached her, my arms snatching her up off her toes, my foot kicking the door shut, tearing the glare of the sun away so that the brightest thing in the room was my mate.

"Sunny," I purred. I hitched her up against my hips, grinning at the instinctive part of her legs, the way her pupils darkened, her warm gaze as they widened. I rocked my hard length into her, and my purr became a growl. "Are you wet for me, petal?"

Sunny whimpered, her tongue flicking out over her lip, her body already falling into the natural motion of riding me. Just two quick motions of shoving clothes aside, and I would be inside my mate again.

"Oh god, Khell," Sunny breathed, breasts pressing into my chest, back arching and lips tipped up in invitation. Begging, really. "I don't think I can—"

"No more waiting," I growled, and dove down, taking her mouth in one bite, parting her lips with the plunge of my tongue in time with the desperate thrust of my hips.

Sunny's flavor was as sweet and fresh as I'd remembered, and I lapped at her cries. Our bodies were trying to meet in fruitless, chaotic union, rutting and rubbing every inch of ourselves together. Sunny's hands clawed at my bare back as she gasped and cried out in the kiss.

No more waiting, I assured myself. Perhaps I would go the old way, kidnap Sunny and woo her in my den until she was as happy to stay as I was to keep her. For now, I abandoned my grip on one of Sunny's thighs in favor of a brief, rough squeeze of her breast, grinning into her yelp, gentling my kisses in apology until she was biting me back for more. My hand moved south, gathering up the fabric of her yellow skirt and shoving it out of my way.

"Khell," Sunny moaned as my claws grazed her inner thighs.

"Mine," I snarled, pressing my forehead to hers.

I had to flex my hand twice before my claws would retract, and they ached in their sleeves. Sunny's underwear was wet under my fingers, and we both groaned as I shoved the little line of lace fabric aside so I could touch her properly.

Soaked and hot and slippery. Ready for me. Or nearly. It had been a month, after all.

I lifted my head to watch as I plunged two fingers into Sunny's weeping cunt. Her eyes shut on a moan, and for a moment as I stroked my way inside of her, that ache vanished, replaced by a sweet and smiling relief.

"There now, petal," I murmured. "It's better now that we're together again, isn't it?"

I dipped my head to kiss her again, sweetly this time, but Sunny's fingers dug into my back, a whine rising in her throat.

The sound was pure pain, faint, but undeniably a wound.

My fingers were gliding easily inside of her, but I stilled them and searched her face.

Her eyes opened again, glittering with tears, pink lips trembling. "I can't do this, Khell."

I froze, the haze of desperate need clearing at those words. Was this a game? No, denial had never been Sunny's strong suit, and the turmoil on her face was far too real.

She'd been trying to say it—not I can't wait, but I can't do this. Impossible. She had called for me. The beast in me refused the words, refused the idea of anything but taking Sunny now, regardless of what she said. But I was not a beast, and my mate was hurting, which was unbearable.

I pulled my fingers free slowly, and Sunny sobbed, sagging forward against my chest as I sorted her panties back into place.

"Astraeya told me," she whispered, and I stiffened, trying to keep a new growl leashed. "You retired."

Oh.
