“Two hundred dollars is not enough for the first time,” I blurted out.

He rolled his eyes. “You want me to go to the ATM?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.” A huge hand closed around mine. “Like you said, Christina: a trial. We’ll see how it is to spend a night together.”

“I’m texting my friend to tell her where I am,” I babbled. “I’m telling James.”

“Go ahead. Send out a bulletin to the whole school. I don’t care who knows.”

God, he really didn’t. I’d never seen someone so immune to what people thought.

I grabbed my coat and followed Patrick out of the pool room. As we passed the dance floor, I waved frantically to James, pointing to Patrick, mouthing “I’m going outside with him.”

James flashed me a grin and a big thumbs-up.

When Patrick says he’ll do something, he’ll do it.

“You can’t tell anyone about the money,” I said desperately.

He shouldered swiftly through the crowd, pulling me behind him as I texted one-handed to Sydney.Hanging out with dude named Patrick at Kappa Sig. Call in an hour. If I don’t answer call James. The room surged with drunk college kids, but people parted to let us through every step of the way.

“I won’t tell, Christina. You have my word.”

Trouble in Mind

Outside, falling snow drifted onto my hair and cheeks. Icicles hung from the frat house roof. I pulled my fingers from Patrick’s to put on my gloves, then glanced at his huge hands.

“You’re not wearing gloves?”

He shrugged. “Don’t need them.”

Right. Why would you, if you were already a human ice cube?

His hand wrapped around mine again in a firm grip. The possessiveness sent a tremor through my body.

We walked quickly through drifts of fresh snow. Patrick led, I clung to his hand for support, and I wanted to blame my unsteadiness on the beers and my heels, but I knew the truth. I was scared, turned on, and in a state of total disbelief that this was happening.

The frostypath led to a cluster of campus buildings. A light announced the ATM. The area was deserted at midnight on a snowy Friday. Far behind us, music and shouts poured from frat row.

Patrick let go of my hand to slide in his card and punch the keypad. I stared as he withdrew two hundred dollars in twenties, took the other ten bills out of his wallet, and held them all in front of my face.

“This is as high as I’ll go.”

Jesus. This was real. Four hundred dollars to fuck this guy.

I could pay for my heat and electricity, pay off Marcus, and have some left over.

If I said yes, I’d always have to live with the knowledge that I’d done this.

I squirmed, crossing my legs under his cold gaze. My pussy ached with need, and my heart slammed my chest.

“Explain to me why you refuse to hook up for free.”
