They were probably expecting the same Brendan, the same Sonia. But he didn’t recognize himself anymore, nor the woman who was holding his hand, her eyes sparkling and her cheeks flushed.

But when they reached the table, Sonia dropped his hand.

“Sonia?” Brendan whispered. She had her arm pulled tight against her side.

Before he could ask if she was okay, Ian looked up.

“Well, look who’s here.” His brother’s grin stretched from ear to ear. “It’s our two favorite people. Don’t tell us you actually walked in together.”

Diana jumped up to hug them both. Though Brendan had always enjoyed hugging her, this embrace made him prickle. A little too tight, a little too long. A little too much boob pressed against his chest. But wasn’t that his own damn fault? He’d started this dynamic five years ago.

And you’ve got to be the one to end it,said Ian’s voice in his head.

Ian slung one arm around Sonia’s shoulders and the other around Diana’s, sauntering to the table. As Brendan followed them, all he could think about was his brother inviting Sonia to watch him fuck Diana.

He was channeling you, said the same voice. Can you blame him? You understand weird twin shit better than anyone.

None of this would be an issue if Sonia were still holding his hand. Or even acknowledging his existence. But she slid into the booth opposite Ian and Di without so much as looking at Brendan.

Confused, he sat down next to her, signaling to the nearest server.

“I don’t believe this,” Di teased, taking a sip of wine. “Brendan and Sonia sitting next to each other? Sonia, you’re not even calling him names.”

Sonia shrugged and smiled, but her shoulders looked a little stiff.

Brendan leaned back in the booth, trying to relax. His arm stretched along the back of the banquette, wanting to circle Sonia.

“Believe it,” he said. “We managed seven hours in my car together and she didn’t call me the devil incarnate once.”

“What?”Di spluttered through a mouthful of wine. Ian swirled his beer in his glass, eyeing them speculatively.

“Brendan offered me a ride up here,” Sonia muttered. “It was decent of him.”

“And what happened on this ride?” Ian asked with a smirk.

“We talked.” Sonia played with a napkin, tearing off little pieces and dropping them on the table. Her foot drummed against Brendan’s. He wrapped his ankle around hers, trying to steady her.

“You talked?” Diana stared at them. “For seven hours?”

“Well, sometimes we were quiet.” Tossing the napkin aside, Sonia arched her neck, trying to look unconcerned. Brendan knew that look.

If only he knew what was going on in her thoughts.

Ian looked them over, shaking his head. “You two aretotally fucking.”

“Ian!” Diana hissed.

“You wanna bet, baby?” Ian leaned back in the booth, mirroring Brendan. “I know my brother. Check out that look on his face. And see how Sonia’s sitting so close to him?”

“Go ahead,” Sonia said drily. “Discuss us like we’re not even here.”

“Are you?” Diana breathed.

“Have you ever seen Brendan this quiet?” Ian asked carelessly.

Brendan opened his mouth. Right then, a server appeared at the table.

“How are we doing tonight, folks?” she asked cheerfully. “Any drinks for you?”
